A worthy device

Written by Rosa Colucci on .

I respectfully disagree with my fellow progressives on the issue of the filibuster. The filibuster is a necessary parliamentary instrument that must be preserved.

While we may grow frustrated and impatient with its use (especially if our party is in the majority at that time), its ability to shore up support for good legislation, to expose weak legislation and, most important, to build consensus is necessary to our republic's governance.

It will also help to ensure that the free and open exchange of ideas remains integral to our legislative process.
