Airport to celebrate 20 years with 'fun day' and tours on Saturday

Pittsburgh International Airport is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its magnificent and, at least for now, overbuilt terminal complex with a “Family Fun Day” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. It will be a rare opportunity for nonticketed passengers to visit the airside building and Airmall. Reservations are recommended and more information can be found here.

A reminder that commuter parking in the North Shore lots and garages will be verboten on Wednesday as the Pirates prepare to euthanize their 2012 season with a 12:35 p.m. game against the Atlanta Braves. Plenty of good seats remain.

PennDOT will open 48 driver’s license centers on Monday, Nov. 5 (the centers are usually closed Mondays) to serve last-minute voter ID customers. That’s how much Gov. Tom Corbett wants you to vote. Thanks to legislation passed in March, all voters will have to show valid photo ID at the polling place. A certificate of sanity after watching the endless, mindless, truthless political advertising that has polluted the airwaves over the past several months is optional.

More obstacles are in store for Pittsburgh motorists this week. The ramp from the inbound Boulevard of the Allies and Parkway East to the Liberty Bridge will close for about a month starting at 8 p.m. Friday. The detour is to continue inbound to Grant Street and turn right at Allies to reach the Liberty Bridge. Caution: If you take the Liberty Bridge-Crosstown off-ramp you’ll have no choice but to go to Crosstown and you’ll never make it to your destination.

There’s more: the other half of the ramp, the one toward Crosstown, will have full weekend closures over the next two weekends. Scheduled times are 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday.

Banksville Road paving will continue at night this week, causing single-lane traffic from 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday until 6 a.m. the following days. Intersection closures and traffic stoppages of up to 15 minutes are possible.

Highland Park Bridge inspection will cause periodic lane closures, including on the ramps, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through late October.

Cleaning and maintenance will close a lane in the outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel at 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with activities concluding by 5:30 a.m. daily.

Brief lane closures may occur on the outbound upper deck of the Fort Duquesne Bridge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. No restrictions are planned on Wednesday for what is certain to be heavy traffic heading to the aforementioned Pirates game.

Have a great week and remember to take two, hit to right and use both lanes to the merge point.
