Road, rail work across the landscape this week

Written by Jon Schmitz on .

roadwork2The westbound Parkway East “bathtub” section will be closed overnight again this week, with traffic forced off at Grant Street. The highway will close at 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, reopening by 5 a.m. each day. The Grant Street on-ramp to the westbound parkway also will close during those times.

Inbound traffic on Route 28 will be restricted to one lane from the 40th Street Bridge to East Ohio Street starting at 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, with work wrapping up by 5 a.m. daily. Brief traffic stoppages also are possible in both directions.

Cleaning of the Squirrel Hill Tunnels will limit traffic to one lane inbound starting at 10 p.m. Sunday and one lane outbound at 10 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, with restrictions lifted by 5 a.m. daily.

A $3.68 million project to improve Warrendale Bayne Road in Marshall will begin Monday. Here’s the PennDOT communique:

The project will create significant improvements for the traveling public on Warrendale Bayne Road between Route 19 and Brush Creek Road. Work includes reconstructing and widening for additional travel and turn lanes, improved drainage, traffic signals, guide rail and bituminous resurfacing. The project also includes work to improve the northbound I-79 off-ramp to Warrendale Bayne Road and the intersections of Innovation Drive and Warrendale Bayne Road and northbound Route 19 and Thorn Hill Road. Overall work will conclude in spring 2013.

Preliminary work including surveying, installation of E&S (Erosion and Sedimentation) controls, breaking existing concrete slabs stockpiled in the infield area between southbound I-79 and Warrendale-Bayne Road that will be used as rock fill in the benching areas, and benching excavation on westbound Warrendale-Bayne Road started last week that did not impact traffic.

Beginning at approximately 9 a.m. on Monday, the following traffic restrictions will be implemented around-the-clock through late November:

Warrendale Bayne Road will be reduced to a single lane in each direction (10-foot width eastbound, 11-foot width westbound) between the entrance to Seven Eleven and entrance to Jergels (east of Route 19). Work includes widening to add a new right-turn lane from westbound Warrendale Bayne Road to northbound Route 19.

Brush Creek Road will be reduced to a single 11-foot wide lane in each direction for widening work needed to add a new right-turn lane from southbound Brush Creek Road to westbound Warrendale Bayne Road.

Traffic on the northbound I-79 off-ramp to Warrendale Bayne Road (Exit 75 Warrendale) will restricted to a single 12-foot wide lane shifted to the right. Work includes widening on the ramp to add a new left-turn lane at the intersection with Warrendale-Bayne Road.

Restrictions will be lifted in late fall. When work resumes next spring (early March through late May), Warrendale Bayne Road will be widened to add an additional lane in each direction from Wheatland Road to Route 19.

Port Authority’s Mount Washington Transit Tunnel will be closed overnight starting at 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday for rail grinding. Rail traffic will detour using the Allentown line. A rail shuttle will operate between Station Square and First Avenue. Affected bus routes will detour via Warrington and Arlington avenues, serving Station Square with a stop on East Carson Street at the Smithfield Street Bridge.

Here’s the City of Pittsburgh resurfacing schedule for the week, with work and restrictions possible from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
