Give PennDOT your two cents' worth

Written by Jon Schmitz on .

From the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation:

PennDOT is asking Pennsylvania motorists to help the department monitor its highway safety efforts by sharing their opinions on traffic safety enforcement and driving behaviors through an online survey available through July 27 at www.JustDrivePA.com.

The 22-question survey focuses on highway safety issues, including seat belts, impaired driving, speeding, motorcycles and distracted driving. People completing the survey may remain anonymous, but are asked to provide their gender, age and ZIP code.

More than 3,500 responded to last year's survey. Last year's notable results included that, in the previous 60 days, nearly 77 percent of respondents had not driven a motor vehicle within two hours after consuming alcoholic beverages. Also, 93 percent of drivers indicated they used a seat belt all or most of the time.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires states to conduct this survey annually.

In today's Orange Barrel Gazette, the big news is tonight's the night the inbound Route 28 ramp to the Veterans Bridge closes. An early start (or maybe a vacation day!) is recommended for Route 28 denizens. The closure lasts until late July.

Also on Route 28, the northbound off-ramp to Sharpsburg (Exit 5A) at the Etna interchange will be closed from 8 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday for gas line replacement.

And still more: The ramps and road connecting Freeport Road to Route 28 in O'Hara will have lane closures in both directions starting at 7 a.m. Thursday and continuing through mid-August to allow concrete patching.

PennDOT has confirmed that the first full weekend closure of the inbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel will begin July 27. Everyone should have an evacuation plan in place.

Service on the Red Line of the Port Authority's Light Rail Transit system will be detoured this weekend because of track work in Beechview.

From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, outbound Red Line service will use the Blue Line route from South Hills Junction to Willow-Overbrook Junction. Bus shuttles will operate along the Red Line from South Hills Junction to Potomac, and rail shuttles will operate from Potomac to Overbrook Junction. Inbound rail service will not be affected. From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, inbound Red Line service will detour to the Blue Line routing at Overbrook Junction. Inbound rail shuttles will operate from Overbrook Junction to Potomac and bus shuttles will operate from Potomac to South Hills Junction. Outbound service will follow its regular routing. Riders should allow for extra time when traveling during the detour, authority spokeswoman Heather Pharo said.

The inbound Liberty Tunnel will be down to one lane at 10 p.m. daily through Thursday for cleaning. Restrictions are lifted by 5 a.m. daily.

Safety improvements at Route 51 and the Fleming Park Bridge in Stowe may cause northbound lane closures from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Friday. Crews will enlarge a curbed median and eventually create a four-way stop there.

Temporary lane restrictions will occur on westbound Interstate 70 on Thursday, from 9 a.m. to noon at mile 53.6 between Yukon and Madison and from noon to 3 p.m. at mile 49.7 between Route 31 and Smithton.
