A well-run marathon

Estimates of the number of runners in Sunday's Pittsburgh Marathon ranged from 19,000 to 25,000 but the number who finished the grueling 26.2 miles on a warm, sticky day was 5,541 -- 3,211 men and 2,330 women. A record 60 runners had to be taken to hospitals. Traffic and parking problems appeared to be minimal, although some runners and spectators had brief delays getting out of town after the event.

Here's what we know about the week ahead on the roads.

The outbound Parkway East will be down to one lane in Monroeville at times this week while crews mill and pave the approach to the new bridge over Business Route 22. The work hours are unusual -- 9 p.m. to 2 p.m. daily through Friday afternoon.

Work to apply protective sealant will cause traffic shifts on the ramp from northbound Interstate 79 to Neville Island and the ramp from Neville Island/Grand Avenue to southbound I-79 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Short-term lane closures on West Liberty Avenue between McFarland Road and Wenzell Avenue in Dormont and Beechview for sign work have been postponed because of bad weather.

Pittsburgh crews will be paving Greenfield Avenue from Second Avenue to Kaercher Street until 7 p.m. Monday and Murray Avenue from Burchfield Avenue to Hazelwood Avenue from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. The city is paving 60 lane miles this season, up from 25 last year, and don't think for a minute that it has anything to do with a mayoral election next year.

Water line installation will close the spur ramp from Lebanon Church Road to southbound Route 885-Clairton Road overnight all week. Vehicles will turn right at the signal. Other restrictions are possible at the intersection. Daily work hours are 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

One lane will be closed in the outbound Liberty Tunnel at 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday for cleaning. No inbound restrictions. Work wraps by 5 a.m. daily.

Intermittent lane closures are possible on northbound Interstate 79 at the new Route 40 overpass in Washington County starting at 8 p.m. daily through Thursday. Restrictions end by 7 a.m. daily.
