Bridge named for Donora's 'Stan the Man' Musial

PennDOT will formally rename the Donora-Monessen Bridge for baseball legend Stan Musial on Friday afternoon, pursuant to legislation passed recently by the General Assembly. The ceremony will be at 2 p.m. at the War Memorial on McKean Avenue (Route 837) in Donora. A reception will follow at the Donora Borough Building at 603 Meldon Ave. You can check out this Hall of Famer's career statistics and link to a lengthy biography here.
Sad postscript: The Observer-Reporter reports that Mr. Musial's wife, Lillian Labash Musial, died Thursday. She was 91.

Here's a synopsis of PennDOT's weekend construction guide. Most major restrictions will be removed by 5 a.m. Sunday for the Pittsburgh Marathon, which will bring plenty of its own restrictions. Work is weather permitting.
The HOV lanes on the Parkway North are open to all outbound traffic on weekends after 7 p.m. on Friday and remain open until 5 a.m. on Mondays. In addition, the two-passenger vehicle rule does not apply during weekend hours. To alleviate congestion, motorists are encouraged to use the HOV lanes to exit the Downtown area following sports games and other events on weekends.
The planned closure of the bridge/ramp from Bedford Avenue to Seventh Avenue this week has been postponed. Closure of the ramp to southbound Interstate 579-Crosstown Boulevard is still on.
Traffic in the westbound (inbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel will be restricted to a single lane from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday for tunnel rehabilitation work.
The Parkway East will be down to one lane westbound between the Allegheny County Jail/Second Avenue ramp (Exit 71B) and Smithfield Street Bridge from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday. In addition, the westbound Grant Street on- and off-ramps will be milled and resurfaced. The following ramps will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Sunday: westbound Grant Street off-ramp; Grant Street on-ramp to westbound parkway; westbound parkway off-ramp to Stanwix Street.
These restrictions will be in effect on the bridge that carries Interstate 79 over Warrendale-Bayne Road as crews install compression seals: single-lane closures from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday; double-lane closures from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Saturday; single-lane closures from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Activation of new traffic signals at the intersection of southbound Route 28 and the 40th Street Bridge in Millvale will occur from 7 a.m. to approximately midnight Saturday. During that time a four-hour closure will be required on southbound Route 28. The exact time of the closure will not be known until crews begin work Saturday.
Approximately 50 Port Authority bus routes will be detoured with temporary stop changes during the marathon on Sunday. Detours will affect routes throughout various city neighborhoods, including Downtown, the North Side, Oakland, West End, South Side and East End. Detours will begin with start of service Sunday and are expected to last until about 2:30 p.m. All routes will remain on detour until this time regardless of local street reopenings. Some routes also will be detoured on Saturday for race-related events. Get the lowdown on your bus at www.portauthority.org.

Traffic on the ramp from inbound Route 65 to California and Marshall avenues on the North Side cannot turn right on Beaver Avenue, a restriction that will remain in place through May 31 as interchange reconstruction continues. Motorists wishing to access Beaver Avenue should continue straight on the southbound Route 65 off-ramp
Starting Monday, milling and resurfacing of Frankstown Road in Penn Hills will cause alternating one-way traffic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays through May 19. The work zone is from Verona Road-North Robinson Boulevard in Penn Hills to Tokay Street in East Hills.
