The perfect gift: A sportula?

Written by Erich Schwartzel on .

It's hard to imagine better real estate than the plot of ceramic tile that the Sportula kiosk occupies in the Westmoreland Mall. Right next to Santa, across the way from Hollister and close enough to hear screaming teenagers in Victoria's Secret, the sports-themed spatula shop is in no short supply of foot traffic.

Closing the deal is a different story.

"Everybody likes it, but they're giving it time," said Kristina Koontz, who's been managing the kiosk since midnight.

The stainless-steel spatulas, which come with cut-out designs on the metal that may or may not leave a decal on a burger, retail for $25.99 and feature nearly every sports team.

There's also a #1 Grandpa spatula for the geriatric griller in your life, and another one dedicated to fire and rescue workers.

Ms. Koontz is from New Jersey, but the Sportula owner moved her from his location there and put her up in a Greensburg hotel room until he hires a local worker. The top-selling spatula in New Jersey features an Eagles design, but it's no surprise which team took the top spot here: the Steelers.

In second place: the Mountaineers
