Influence pedaling

Written by Diana Nelson Jones on .

Bicycle advocates will be holding a commuting workshop for all of us not-so-intrepid pedalers this evening from 6:30 to 8:30 at Artist Image Resource, 518 Foreland Street in Deutschtown on the North Side.

fatcyclistsBikePGH and the Northside Leadership Conference will give you maps, tips for safe commuting and information about the impact bike advocates are trying to have in the city. If you’re interested in attending, email Stephanie Miller at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call 412-330-2554.

BikePGH and the Northside Bike/Ped Committee of the Northside Leadership Conference are sponsoring a Car Free Friday celebration this Friday, starting with a 7 a.m. breakfast at the East Ohio Street and Cedar Avenue corner of Allegheny Commons Park. This, too, is in Deutschtown. Here's the car-free blog: http://bike-pgh.org/2010/07/car-free-fridays-features-the-northside-this-week/

Car Free Fridays started last year as an incentive for people to leave their cars at home at least one day a week to enjoy the fresh air on a bike or on foot or get some social exercise riding a bus, onto which you can mount a bike.

Along with breakfast from Bistro To-Go, the event will include raffles, informational packets and deals from local establishments before you have to pedal off to work ...

... but return to the park at 5 p.m. for a guided bike tour of North Side neighborhoods. At that event, you can get a free bike tune-up and repair provided by Free Ride. (Bring along some totes because Citiparks’ Friday farmers market will be in full swing in the park then.)

Free Ride is a bicycling collective with a mission of recycling bicycles, offering mechanical education and promoting bicycling.

And finally, on Saturday, July 31, from 3 to 4.30p, a walking tour that BikePGH has teamed up to sponsor with Allegheny Commons Initiative — a project of the Northside Leadership Conference — and the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation.

From Lake Elizabeth to the Hampton Battery, the tour will meet at the entrance to Allegheny Commons Park on East Ohio Street and Cedar Avenue. Reserve your spot today by calling MaryLu at 412-471-5808, ext. 527 by July 29th.  Updated tour information can be found at: http://www.phlf.org/phlf-tours-events/walking-tours/free-saturday-walking-tours/.
