Quick Shell update and practice notes

Written by Sam Werner on .

A few quick notes from Pitt's eighth practice of the spring season...

- As expected, sophomore running back Rushel Shell was not in attendance. Pitt coach Paul Chryst released a statement this afternoon, which you can read below, saying Shell will take some "time away from football." Chryst declined to comment on Shell's situation after practice, only referring to the statement. From what I have heard, there hasn't been much change in the situation today. Shell is still considering a transfer, but has not formally requested his paperwork to do so. The next step will likely be either a return to the team or a request for a formal release, which would pretty much seal the deal on his departure. The timetable seems pretty open-ended at this point, but I can't imagine it lasting too much longer.

- Linebacker Deaysean Rippy, who I know has been the subject of transfer rumors as well, was in attendance and fully participated in practice today.

- Pitt hosted about 75 recruits at practice today, mostly current high school juniors, but a few sophomores as well. Class of 2013 signees Zach Challingsworth and Devon Edwards were also in attendance, as was former Pitt coach Walt Harris.

Leading Scorer: Andrew Ladd, 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists).

Last Game: 4-1 road win against the Hurricanes, Tuesday. Evander Kane had a goal and three assists for the Jets.

Last Game against the Penguins: 3-1 home loss, Feb. 15. Craig Adams scored two goals for the Penguins.

Jets Player We Would Bet Money On Scoring: Dustin Byfuglien (right). He has points in three consecutive games.

Ex-Jets/Thrashers on the Penguins:  Jason Botterill, assistant general manager; Pascal Dupuis, RW; Tanner Glass, LW; Chris Kunitz, LW; Todd Reirden, assistant coach.

Useless Jets/Thrashers Trivia Vaguely Related to the Penguins: Pascal Dupuis is one of two one-time members of the Penguins to wear No. 9 for the Thrashers/Jets franchise. The other was one of the players he was traded for, Erik Christensen.

Best Jets/Thrashers Video We Could Find: Ray Shero's previous big trade from 2008 - Acquiring Marian Hossa and Dupuis from the Thrashers in exchange for Colby Armstrong, Christensen, Angelo Esposito and a first-round pick in 2008:

Probable goaltenders: Tomas Vokoun (8-3-0, 2.72 GAA, .910 SV%) for the Penguins. Ondrej Pavelec (15-14-2, 2.75 GAA, .905 SV%) for the Jets.

Injuries: For the Penguins, center Evgeni Malkin ("upper body") is probable. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury ("upper-body") is questionable. Defenseman Kris Letang ("lower-body") is on injured reserve. For the Jets, defenseman Mark Stuart ("upper body") is doubtful. Centers Jim Slater ("upper body"), James Wright ("upper body"), right winger Anthony Peluso ("upper body") and defenseman Zach Redmond (leg) are on injured reserve .

Potential lines and defensive pairings: Based on today's morning skate, consider this an educated guess:

14 Chris Kunitz - 87 Sidney Crosby - 9 Pascal Dupuis
10 Brenden Morrow - 71 Evgeni Malkin - 18 James Neal
24 Matt Cooke - 16 Brandon Sutter - 48 Tyler Kennedy
15 Tanner Glass - 46 Joe Vitale - 27 Craig Adams

44 Brooks Orpik - 7 Paul Martin
2 Matt Niskanen - 3 Douglas Murray
47 Simon Despres - 4 Mark Eaton

-The Jets' expected lines and defensive pairings are:

16 Andrew Ladd - 18 Bryan Little - 26 Blake Wheeler
9 Evander Kane - 12 Olli Jokinen - 20 Antti Miettinen
28 Patrice Cormier - 80 Nikolai Antropov - 13 Kyle Wellwood
27 Eric Tangradi - 8 Alexander Burmistrov - 22 Chris Thorburn

29 Tobias Enstrom - 33 Dustin Byfuglien
44 Zach Bogosian - 6 Ron Hainsey
7 Derek Meech - 24 Grant Clitsome

Notes:

-The last time the Jets' played the Penguins, this happened:

-The Penguins have won 13 consecutive games. The streak is the second-longest in franchise history, second only to it's NHL-record 17-game streak in 1992-93.

-Murray is making his debut with the Penguins.

-Orpik is one game from surpassing Ron Schock (619) for sixth most games in franchise history.

-Dupuis has 198 career points with the franchise.

-Vokoun has 49 career shutouts.

-Martin has 197 career assists.

-Tangardi is playing his first game in Pittsburgh since being traded to the Jets, Feb. 13.

Twenty Years Later - Penguins 4, Capitals 1 - 03-28-13

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2012-13 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1992-93 season which led to the only President's Trophy in franchise history. The 1992-93 squad is commonly regarded as the most talented in the history of the Penguins. We will look back on games on the date they happened.

Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-1 win against the Washington Capitals, March 28, 1993.

The Penguins won their 10th consecutive game at the Capital Centre in Landover, Md. Center Mike Stapleton gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead 8:45 into the game with a goal against goaltender Rick Tabaracci. Assists went to centers Martin Straka and Dave Tippett.

At 9:56 of the second period, left winger Kevin Stevens scored the eventual game-winning goal on a power play. Centers Ron Francis and Mario Lemieux were credited with assists.

Just 45 seconds into the third period, right winger Rick Tocchet scored off assists from Stevens and Lemieux to make it a 3-0 game.

Washington finally got on the scoreboard at the 13:24 mark when right winger Pat Elyniuk scored against goaltender Tom Barrasso. The only assist was credited to center Dale Hunter.

Late in the contest at 18:50, Lemieux scored an empty-net goal off assists from Tocchet and Tippett.

Notes:

-Barrasso made 30 saves to record the win.

-The three stars were 1.) Barrasso 2.) Stevens 3.) Lemieux.

-The win clinched the Penguins' second Patrick Division title in franchise history. The previous one was in 1990-91.

-Former Capitals defenseman Larry Murphy was scratched due to a back ailment.

Patrick Division standings:
