Thinking ahead to next Easter; Great deal on daffodil bulbs

Written by Doug Oster on .

the works'The Works' is a wonderful mixture of daffodils from White Flower Farm. They are offing them for a deal, order now, plant in the fall when the bulbs are shipped. Photo courtesy of White Flower Farm

I was surprised to see something about fall bulb planting from White Flower Farm in my e-mail this morning.

They were advertising one of my favorite mixes, 'The Works.'

I started planting that mixture nearly 15 years ago trying to duplicate Daffodil Hill from Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland. It was on a visit to the cemetery as a young boy to visit the graves of my grandparents in which is was profoundly affected by all the blooms on that hill.

'The Works' is a great way to add lots of good bulbs and they're on sale now for fall planting.

This is a great time to plan bulb planting season, we can see where the daffodils are needed. I'm always writing down where the bulbs are coming up in the spring, and more importantly, where they aren't. Now I'll know where to plant when the time is right.

Here are the details.

Sequester Bunnies

It took the GOP-led congress four years to put together a budget because they were far too busy trying to unseat Obama to be worried about their real mission.

Twenty Years Later - Penguins 6, Senators 4 - 03-30-13

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2012-13 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1992-93 season which led to the only President's Trophy in franchise history. The 1992-93 squad is commonly regarded as the most talented in the history of the Penguins. We will look back on games on the date they happened.

Today, we look at the Penguins' 6-4 win against the Ottawa Senators, March 31, 1993.

The Penguins won their 11th consecutive game at the Civic Arena. An unassisted goal by defenseman Kjell Samuelsson against goaltender Peter Sidorkiewicz gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead 8:48 into the contest.

Ottawa responded shortly after that at 8:57 of the first period when center Laurie Boschman scored against goaltender Ken Wregget. Assists went to left wingers Darcy Loewen and Mark Freer.

Exactly four minutes later at the 12:57 mark, defenseman Brad Shaw scored on a power play off assists from defenseman Norm Maciver and center Jamie Baker to give the Senators a 2-1 lead.

The Penguins tied the game, 21-2, at 16:00 when defenseman Larry Murphy scored. Center Mario Lemieux and left winger Kevin Stevens netted assists.

A goal by center Ron Francis late in the period at the 19:08 mark gave the Penguins a 3-2 lead. Right winger Jaromir Jagr and defenseman Mike Ramsey collected assists.

Murphy scored his 20th goal of the season 7:24 into the second period on a power play off assists from Francis and Stevens.

Exactly five minutes later at the 12:24 mark, Francis scored the eventual game-winning goal. Assists went to right winger Joe Mullen and left wingers Jeff Daniels.

Late in the period at 18:47, a goal by right winger Dave Archibald made it a 5-3 contest. Maciver and Shaw had assists.

Lemieux scored 6:57 into the third period to put the Penguins up 6-3. Right winger Rick Tocchet netted the lone assists.

The game's final goal was scored by right winger Jody Hull on a power play at 8:49. Assists went to Freer and defenseman Chris Luongo.

Notes:

-Wregget made 19 saves in the victory.

-Murphy's first goal was the 200th of his career.

-Ramsey recorded his first point with the Penguins.

-The Penguins tied a franchise record by going unbeaten in 11 consecutive games. The original mark was set by the 1975-76 club which went had a 7-0-4 stretch.
