Thurston Moore bumps Chux Beta from show over 'stripper' comment

Written by Scott Mervis on .

chuxbetaChux Beta was thrilled to open for one of its musical heroes, Thurston Moore, and his new band Chelsea Light Moving, Tuesday night at Mr. Smalls.

At the last minute, though, the band claims that it has been squeezed out of that spot, replaced by Shockwave Riderz, the new band from The Modey Lemon's Paul Quattrone and Phil Boyd.

The reason?

The band says it was told by promoter Opus One Productions that the Sonic Youth guitarist was offended by a live video from the Pittsburgh Rock Awards where one of the Chux Beta members jokes, "Where are the strippers?" -- who had been on stage presenting the band with an award.

CB's James Dunn says,"In your humble opinion, do you really think Thurston Moore watched a [crappy] Chux Beta YouTube clip? I mean come on!"

He adds, "I just don't see Thurston Moore being offended by 'Where are the strippers? I would've believed, 'Hey they didn't like your music.' "

Normally, he says, a comment about strippers would not appear in one of the band's videos.

"We're 30 somethings in a glorified grunge band," Dunn says laughing, "not Mötley Crüe."

He speculates that the real reason is that the Modey Lemon is just better connected in the scene.

"We support so many Pittsburgh bands and causes. We did a St. Jude's benefit, we try and do the right thing and keep plugging along and this is the thanks you get," Dunn says, adding, "It's hard not to talk about this without sounding like an entitled child."

Sticking with company policy, Opus One did not comment, and Moore is not doing interviews.

ICYMI / Simple Sugars founder Lani Lazzari of Fox Chapel makes a splash on ABC's 'Shark Tank'

Written by Sara Bauknecht on .

SharkTank SimpleSugars

Eighteen-year-old Lani Lazarri of Fox Chapel made a splash Friday on ABC's reality show "Shark Tank" when she pitched her Simple Sugars scrubs to the program's panel of millionaire and billionaire investors.

She charmed the sharks with her fresh face, polite personality and business smarts, even inviting business woman Lori Greiner to try out the all-natural product.

In short, the investors were impressed, calling her one of the best pitchers the show has ever featured.  Investor Mark Cuban was the only shark to make Lani an offer:  $100,000 for a 33 percent stake in her company.  The teen accepted, after some unsuccessful bargaining.

Miss the episode?  Watch Lani in action at ABC.com. Her segment starts at 22 minutes into the show.

Met Opera' s Live in HD simulcasts for 2013-14

Written by Andrew Druckenbrod on .

By Robert Croan, Post-Gazette Senior Editor

If there needed to be proof that the world of opera has something for everyone,
the current season of the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD has been a living testament.
From the light comedy of Donizetti’s “The Elixir of Love” to the philosophical depths
(and musical sublimities) of Wagner’s “Parsifal”; from Thomas Ades’s contemporary
take on Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” to the upcoming baroque extravaganza of
Handel’s “Julius Caesar” (which closes this season April 27); from a traditional staging
of Verdi’s “Aida” to his “Rigoletto” moved to 1960s Las Vegas, inspired by the antics of
the Rat Pack. English-language subtitles for all productions have de-mystified the idea of
watching an opera. The plots become as clear as in any foreign-language film.
The upcoming season is similarly diverse, with three Russian works and one
Czech, new productions of “Eugene Onegin,” “Prince Igor,” “Falstaff” and “Werther,”
and starry casts including sopranos Anna Netrebko and Renee Fleming, mezzos Joyce
DiDonato and Stephanie Blythe, tenors Juan Diego Florez and Jonas Kaufmann. A
special novelty will be Shostakovich’s “The Nose,” an uproarious 1920s comedy that
was successfully revived in 2010 with “South Pacific” star Paolo Szot. American soprano
Lisette Oropesa, who won Pittsburgh audiences in Mozart’s “The Abudction from the
Seraglio,” will be the ingénue Nanetta in “Falstaff.”
There are now three Pittsburgh area theaters that show The Met in HD: Cinemark
Robinson in Settler’s Ridge Center at Exit 61 on the Parkway West (I-376), Cinemark
18 in Pittsburgh Mills at Exit 12A on PA-28, and the Pittsburgh North 11 Theater at
9700 McKnight Road. The simulcasts are live on Saturday afternoons, with "encore"
presentations on Wednesday evenings two weeks later and eventually on home TV in
PBS's "Great Performance" series. It should be noted that "Live in HD" performances (10
in 2013-14, cut back from 12 this season) coincide with the Met's Saturday afternoon live
radio broadcasts – a great American cultural tradition since 1931, aired weekly during the
season on WQED-FM.

The 2013-14 Live in HD broadcast schedule begins Oct. 5 with a new production
of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin, featuring Mariusz Kwiecien in the title role. The
remaining operas are:

Shostakovich: “The Nose,” 12:55 p.m. Oct. 26, 2013
Puccini: “Tosca,” 12:55 p.m. Nov. 9, 2013
Verdi: “Falstaff,” 12:55 p.m. Dec. 14, 2013
Dvorak: “Rusalka,” 12:55 p.m. Feb. 8, 2014
Borodin: “Prince Igor,” 12 Noon, March 1, 2014
Massenet: “Werther,” 12:55 p.m. March 15, 2014
Puccini: “La Boheme,” 12:55 p.m. April 5, 2014
Mozart: “Cosi fan tutte,” 12:55 p.m. April 26, 2014
Rossini: “La Cenerentola,” 12:55 p.m. May 10, 2014

First lady fashion / Michelle Obama celebrates Easter in recycled Prabal Gurung dress

Written by Sara Bauknecht on .

Obama easter 400

Oh, Michelle Obama, you've done it again!

The first lady stepped out in style Easter morning wearing a white Prabal Gurung gown with gray floral print.  She layered the look with a matching gray three-quarter-length sleeved coat.

For those who closely track her fashion choices, this one should look familiar.  Mrs. Obama donned it last summer with a silver belt and minus the coat for a dinner for former president George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush.

On Easter, daughters Sasha and Malia also marked the occasion with fashion-forward ensembles. And Mr. Obama looked sharply dressed, too, in blue and gray.

Which outfit is your favorite?  Share your thoughts in the comment thread below.
