QB competetion heats up with Trickett

Written by Jenn Menendez on .

The quarterback competition at West Virginia just got awfully interesting.

Florida State transfer Clint Trickett, the son of former assistant Rick Trickett, announced on twitter this morning that he will transfer to West Virginia.

The school confirmed his transfer in a press release sent out just after 3 p.m.

Trickett is slated to graduate in May, and eligible to play immediately.

Trickett made an official visit to West Virginia to watch the Blue-Gold spring game on April 20 where neither quarterback – junior Paul Millard nor redshirt freshman Ford Childress – exhibited he was the runaway favorite to succeed Geno Smith.

That means preseason will feature a legit three-way competetion for the starting job.

Trickett spent most of his career at FSU backing up two first round picks - Christian Ponder and E.J. Manuel who went No. 16 overall last weekend to the Buffalo Bills.

He said on twitter this morning: “It's official, I will finish my academic/athletic career at WVU. This is a dream come true to be playin for the state I love. #CountryRoads

In the prepared statement sent out by the school, Trickett said West Virginia is a fit for him.

“I’d like to first thank Florida State for all the things that were done for me,” Trickett said. “I’m excited now to continue my academic and athletic career at West Virginia University. Not only was it home for me, the place I grew up and the state I love, but also it’s the best fit for me athletically. I appreciate the recruitment by WVU and the other programs, which were all class acts, but it was hard for me to say no to the state and team that I grew up loving.“

Coach Dana Holgorsen also welcomed Trickett in the release.

“WVU football welcomes Clint Trickett home. He basically grew up in Morgantown, and I know he feels very comfortable here,” Holgorsen said. “He’s an excellent student and grew up around the game of football, which shows in his composure on the field. I am excited that he has decided to finish his career as a Mountaineer.”

NHL announces outdoor game between Penguins, Blackhawks - 05-01-13

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

One of the worst-kept secrets was revealed today when the NHL officially announced the Penguins would face the Blackhawks in Chicago's Soldier Field next season. The game is scheduled for March. 1

This will be the third outdoor game the Penguins will have participated in. In 2008, they faed the Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. and hosted the Capitals at Heinz Field in 2011.

The Blackhawks will participate in their second outdoor game having previously hosted the Red Wings in 2009.

EN Says: Overkill.

With the usual Winter Classic being held New Year's Day between the Maple Leafs and Red Wings at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich, the NHL is oversaturating a product which saw it's novelty wear off a long time ago.

That said, the event will sell-out for grossly over-priced tickets and a tire or phone company will pay big bucks to sponsor it. That's the only justification the NHL needs to scheduling multiple outdoor games.

Perfect time to divide hostas

Written by Doug Oster on .

blog o430 hosta sproutI love to split hostas just before the unfurl. If you don't get to it, dont' worry, they are tough and can be split any time. Photo by Doug OsterSpring is a great time to split hostas. I try to get to them before they unfurl, but it doesn't always work out that way. The spring garden has many demands as you know.

I like to move a piece of a favorite to another bed. It's fun to increase the hostas in the garden.

There's a couple ways to do it. If the plant is huge and has never been divided, the whole thing can be dug out and cut into four pieces or more depending on the size.

If that seems too drastic, just cut a piece off the side. When I'm rushed that's what I'll do.

Always have the planting hole ready so the hosta is out of the ground for the shortest time. Fill it with compost of some other organic matter.

This is a great job on a overcast day. If it can't wait, dig at the end of the day. The transplant will have time overnight to get settled.

Always water in a plant which has been moved and give it a littl extra love for the first month.

Hostas are tough and respond well to transplanting.

I just love getting more free plants!
