Learn to garden at Phipps. Adult classes announced.

Registration is now open for the following diverse adult education classes offered by Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, one of the world’s greenest public gardens:

Gardening for Four Seasons of Interest

Dates & Time: Jan. 8, 22 and 29; Feb. 5; 7 – 9 p.m.

Instructor: Leslie Kaplan

Fee: $88 members; $128 non-members

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

Each week, this class will focus on landscaping for a different season, along with ideas for hardscape.

 

Arranging with the Seasons

Dates & Time: Jan. 14; Feb. 18; March 11; April 8; 7 – 9 p.m.

Instructor: Jimmy Lohr

Fee: $88 members; $128 non-members, plus $30 material fee per session

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

Students will learn about locally available flowers and create an arrangement from what is in season.

 

Colored Pencil I: Techniques

Dates & Time: Jan. 19 and 26; Feb. 2; 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Instructor: Amy Lindenberger

Fee: $198 members; $248 non-members

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

The focus of this course is to familiarize students with the tools of the colored pencil medium, color applications and fundamentals of color theory, as well as to develop color perception.

 

Pomegranate Twin Arrangement

Date & Time: Jan. 19; 10 a.m. – noon

Instructor: Norbert Pietrzak

Fee: $25 members; $35 non-member, plus $65 material fee

Location: Botany Hall at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Oakland

Students in this class will learn how to make a truly unique bonsai arrangement using this blooming tropical. Arrangements will be set in an attractive glazed pot that is sure to stand out in any collection.

 

Basic Horticulture

Dates: Jan. 30; Feb. 6, 13 and 20; March 6, 13, 20 and 27; 7 – 9 p.m.

Instructor: Scott Creary

Fee: $176 members; $226 non-members

Location: Botany Hall at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Oakland

Students will learn about soils, plant nutrition, and environmental factors that affect plant growth and development. Classroom lecture will be balanced with hands-on propagation in the greenhouse.
