Last minute gifts for gardeners

Here's a list of things gardeners would love to have. Most are easy to find at any good garden center or nursery.

Harvest baskets are pretty and utilitarian. If your favorite gardener is into growing veggies, this is a wonderful gift.

A  good watering can is a must. It's going to be left in the garden, so it might as well be beautiful.

Every gardener needs another pair of hand pruners. Felco makes awesome stuff along with Dramm and Fiskars. There are hand pruners with rotating handles to help gardeners with arthritis or who have trouble squeezing the handle.

I love an orange plastic garden trug and use it almost every day in the garden. It's great for carrying compost, weeds, mulch and just about anything else.

Statues, stones and other cool decorations will make any gardener smile.

Big, beautiful containers will be filled with amazing plants all season long.

My number one tool for gardeners is a bulb auger. It's a giant drill bit which makes bulb planting easier.

Holiday plants like amaryllis, paperwhites, rosemary, miniature roses, cyclamen and Christmas cactus are fun to grow on the windowsill.

Something for the birds. Feeders, birdbath, suet will all attract birds who in turn will eat some bugs next summer. They are fun to watch all winter long.

My favorite gardening book of the year was Niki Jabbour's "The Year Round Vegetable Gardener." It's an inspiring and wonderful read.

Gardeners are easy to buy for and although many people don't like giving gift certificates, that's the perfect gift for any gardener. Local nurseries and garden centers are happy to sell you a gift certificate. It allows the recipient to buy something they want, but wouldn't usually get for themselves.
