New garden classes announced at Phipps

Phipps Opens Registration for November Adult Education Classes

Covering topics ranging from the meaning of color to making the perfect Thanksgiving centerpiece, Phipps’ upcoming class schedule holds something for the artist in everyone.

 

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Registration is now open for the following diverse adult education classes offered by Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, one of the world’s greenest public gardens:

 

Composition: The Digital Advantage

Dates & Time: Sat., Nov 3, 10 and 17; Dec. 1; 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Instructor: Bob Egan

Fee: $120 members; $165 non-members

Location: Botany Hall at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

During this course, students will explore how to effectively compose an image that draws in the viewer’s eye and leads it through the photograph. Students will learn to train their eyes to compose pictures everywhere they look – and to effectively capture those images.

 

Understanding Color

Date & Time: Tues., Nov. 6; 7-9 p.m.

Instructor: Lorraine Linkhauer

Fee: $20 members; $30 non-members

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

Students in this class will learn the basic properties and meanings of color. Topics that will be covered include hue, value, intensity, color harmony, and color psychology.

 

Illustrating Fruit and Berries with Colored Pencils

Date & Time: Sat., Nov. 10; 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Instructor: Janie Pirie

Fee: $150 members; $190 non-members

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

Students in this course will learn to create rich and colorful drawings of fruit and berries by focusing on composition and technique, including how to blend colors and create different textures and surface areas to make subjects look real.

 

Thanksgiving Centerpiece

Date & Time: Tues., Nov. 20; 7-9 p.m.

Instructor: Mary Anne Alvin

Fee: $20 members; $30 non-members, plus $25 material fee payable with registration

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

In this class, students will use fresh flowers, feathers, seed pods and fall leaves to create a beautiful centerpiece just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.
