Learn to garden at Phipps, new classes and field trips announced

Phipps Opens Registration for Late Summer Adult Education Classes

From fall garden planting basics to fresh, seasonal cooking instruction, Phipps’ upcoming class schedule holds something for the plant lover in everyone.

 

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Registration is now open for the following diverse adult education classes offered by Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens:

Make Your Own Compost Tea Brewer

Date: Tues., July 31

Time: 7–9 p.m.

Instructor: Walter Jarosh

Fee: $20 members: $30 non-members

Material Fee: $30, payable with registration

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

Compost tea can greatly benefit lawns and gardens by increasing the microbial life found in soil. Students in this course will construct a 5-gallon brewer and learn how to use its yield.

Out of the Garden, Into the Kitchen

Dates: Wed., Aug. 15

Time: 6:30–8:30 p.m.

Fee: $25

Location: Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

Students in this course receive a tour of Phipps’ organically managed green roof Edible Garden and then learn how to make a variety of healthy dishes using seasonal, garden-fresh ingredients.

 

Green Building and Ecological Gardening Tour: Macoskey Center for Sustainable Systems

Date: Sat., Aug. 18

Time: 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Fee: $20 members; $25 non-members

Location: Slippery Rock University

Students in this class will visit one of our region’s longest standing resources for sustainability education. The sites’ main office and education space is Harmony House, a 1920s farmhouse that has been upgraded to achieve LEED® Silver under the Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance program.

Glass Flowers, Glass Plants

Date: Mon., Aug. 20

Time: 7–9 p.m.

Instructor: Daviea Davis

Fee: $20 members; $30 non-members

Material Fee: $5, payable with registration

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

Students in this summer evening course will create a beautiful glass mosaic sun catcher depicting a garden that will always be in full bloom.

 

The Meaning of Color

Dates: Wed., Aug. 22

Time: 7–9 p.m.

Instructor: Lorraine Linkhauer

Fee: $20 members; $30 non-members

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

This class will cover the basic properties of color, including hue, value, intensity, and harmony. It will also touch upon color psychology and present some interpretations of color meanings.

 

Planting Your Fall Vegetable Garden

Date: Thurs., Aug 29 and Sat., Sept. 1

Time: Wed.: 7–9 p.m.; Sat.: 9:30–11:30 a.m.

Instructor: Juliette Jones

Fee: $40 members; $60 non-members

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

This course is designed for beginners who want to get more out of their herb and vegetable gardens. Students will learn about fall planting for both this season and next, as well as plants that attract beneficial insects to the garden. The Saturday class will also include a hands-on planting session.
