Discovering  a pale orange 'Santa' tomato just starting to blush is a great welcome to the first day of summer.
This was one of the first varieties marketed as grape tomatoes. Something to snack on in the middle of winter which actually tasted like a tomato.

It will be a day or two until it turns bright red and will probably be examined every few hours to be harvested at its peak. In a month when tomatoes are plentiful, the thrill of early picking is gone, but there's still a thrill.

Some people don't count cherry tomatoes as the first tomatoes of the season, but I sure do. 'Santa' is prolific, early, filled with flavor but I don't find it to be as sweet grown in the garden instead of greenhouse, funny huh?

The first will be the sweetest, but I can't wait until we can fill a bowl with these and enjoy them warm in the garden.
