Amazing rose garden, a Pittsburgh area hidden gem

Written by Doug Oster on .

The sweet heavy scent of roses fills the at the Garden Club of McKeesport Rose Garden and Arboretum in McKeesport.

I've been there before, but never saw the roses in their prime until this week.

There are over 2000 roses here and they are in full bloom, continuing most of the summer with another spectacular show in September.

This garden is free, open to the public and amazing.

The three acre site is maintained entirely by volunteers. Every Wednesday is work day, and boy do they work to keep the garden looking great. Those that can't spend time out in the garden make crafts inside as a way to raise funds for the garden.

But there's more than roses here. There's a long perennial bed filled with blooming plants, an herb garden, butterfly garden, lots of interesting trees and a calming water garden.

It takes only 20 minutes from downtown to get to the garden, there's plenty of free parking and it's spectacular. The garden is located at 1400 Pin Oak Drive in McKeesport, Pa.

Be sure to check out my video of the garden to the right in the video player.
