Food Network's Iron Chef show offered viewers the Super Chef Battle. The usual format pits one great chef against another, cooking with a secret ingredient. But this special episode teamed Bobby Flay (left) with White House Chef Cristeta Comerford and also Mario Batali with Emeril Lagasse. The secret ingredient, as announced to the chefs by first lady Michelle Obama; anything out of the White House Garden.

The chefs showed the audience what gardeners already know, fresh produce is one of the most important building blocks for great recipes. Harvest baskets in hand, the chefs collected carrots, tomatoes, cauliflower, beans, spinach, greens and more. The vegetables were the stars of the recipes, supplemented with various fresh proteins including meats, seafood and poultry.

It was an amazing display of culinary greatness which showcased the wide variety of ways garden produce can be used.

Cooking and gardening go hand in hand. They both combine science with creativity, are therepeutic and can be really good for you. I hope the show inspires viewers to grow their own.

The show will play again Thursday 1/7 at 8 p.m. and Saturday 1/9 at 4 p.m.
