Will WALL-E win the Oscar?
Fourteen animated movies, half of which have yet to arrive in theaters, have been submitted for consideration in the Best Animated Feature category of the Academy Awards.
The list will be winnowed to three on Jan. 22, when nominations for the 81st Oscars will be announced.
The list of 14: "Bolt," "Delgo," "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!" "Dragon Hunters," "Fly Me to the Moon," "Igor," "Kung Fu Panda," "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa," "9.99," "The Sky Crawlers," "Sword of the Stranger," "The Tale of Despereaux," "WALL-E" and "Waltz With Bashir."
"Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" opened with a remarkable $63.1 million this past weekend, while "Kung Fu Panda" snuck onto video shelves at the same time. "WALL-E," which certainly will be one of the three nominated movies, arrives on Nov. 18.
"Waltz With Bashir" played Saturday and tonight (show was at 7 p.m.) at the Regent Square Theater as part of the Three Rivers Film Festival.
In case you were wondering, previous winners of Oscars for Animated Feature Film: "Ratatouille," 2007; "Happy Feet," 2006; "Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit," 2005; "The Incredibles," 2004; "Finding Nemo," 2003; "Spirited Away," 2002; and "Shrek," 2001.
This year's Oscars will be handed out Feb. 22.
