Construction crews have begun to backfill part of the giant excavation at the new Gateway Center subway station, removing a temporary bridge that carried Penn Avenue over the big hole. By late June, North Shore Connector project director Keith Wargo said, the piece of Stanwix Street from Penn Avenue to Fort Duquesne Boulevard will reopen. For now, it serves only as an access spur to a parking garage.

The Project That Everyone Opposes Now That It's 70 Percent Built remains on schedule for a late 2011 or early 2012 opening.
