Week 2 analysis: Not much changed on my ballot this week because only two teams lost. I decided not to include WVU on my ballot because of their lack of the manner in which they lost. I did the same thing after Clemson lost to Alabama in the opening week. My thinking is that WVU and Clemson have to earn their way back into the rankings because their performances in their losses were so poor....The Mountain West has as many teams ranked as the Big East and one more than the ACC. I was halfway hoping Wake Forest would lose to Mississippi on Saturday because I was wondering when the last time a BCS conference did not have at least one team ranked. We'll have to wait for that answer...BYU was very lucky to win at Washington. I know what the rule says, but an official has to use some measure of judgment on a play like that. If a supervisor of officials calls an official on the carpet for not making that call then we have a problem with the way the officials are being reviewed. This should be a valuable teaching tool for all officiating crews. DO NOT INTERJECT YOURSELF INTO THE GAME UNECESSARILY...Watching the South Florida-Central Florida game Saturday night made me think that maybe the reason Miami and Florida State are down is because USF and UCF are now biting into the recruiting bases of each school. The state of Florida could support three major schools just fine, but maybe not five.
New on my ballot:
Utah -- I put the Utes at No. 24 more or less because I had to put some team there with WVU and South Carolina losing. Yes, the Utes beat Michigan and UNLV, but I still need to be convinced that they'll be a fixture in the polls all season.
UCLA -- I went back and forth on the No. 25 spot. It was either the Bruins or WVU. I just kept coming back to how poor the Mountaineers looked. It's not that I'm convinced UCLA is for real. They'll get to show whether they are or not against BYU.
On the cusp of my ballot:
WVU -- I'm hoping the Mountaineers aren't as bad as they looked. If they are, the Big East is going to be absolutely wide open.
