Christmas Cactus

Written by Doug Oster on .

Back from Paris! What a great vacation, tomorrow I'll start posting some garden related photos and stories from there.

I've really gotten into succulents; they are easy to grow in the garden all summer and are happy to winter in the windowsill. I got a surprise when I saw that my daughter had put an angel on this tall cactus. Now that's a Christmas cactus! I think they are beautiful, but not everyone agrees.

If you're looking for something to grow inside, give succulents a try, the only way to kill them is overwater and over fertilize. Chapon's Greenhouse on Streets Run Road in Baldwin has a lot of cool looking stuff, but any greenhouse or garden center that's open in the winter would have them too.

They are the only plants that thrive in strawberry pots and that's how I grow many of them.

The nice thing about this Christmas cactus is that I never have to worry when it will bloom.
