-Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defenseman Robert Bortuzzo and forward Jesse Boulerice were each suspended one game for their roles in a fight-filled game with the Norfolk Admirals last week.

-Two goals by Alexander Smigelski led the Wheeling Nailers to a 6-3 defeat of the Kalamazoo Wings. Teammates Dany Masse, Andrew Lord and Kyle Bushee each recorded two assists. Mattais Modig made 30 saves in the victory.

-Former Penguins forward Georges Laraque has offered the city of Edmonton $100,000 if it will move an aging elephant from the city's zoo to a sanctuary.

Atlantic Division

-James van Riemsdyk scored two goals and led the Flyers to a 5-3 win at Montreal. Jeff Carter added a goal and an assist for Philadelphia while teammate Nikolay Zherdev netted a goal and an assist. Sergei Bobrovsky made 38 saves in the victory. P.K. Subban had a goal and an assist for the Canadiens.

-Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger left the game in the second period due to a "lower-body" injury.

-Martin Brodeur made 29 saves for the Devils in a 3-0 shutout of the Coyotes. Ilya Kovalchuk had two goals, the first multi-goal game of his Devils career, while teammates Patrik Elias and Travis Zajac each recorded two assists.

-Devils forward Brian Rolston (right) cleared waivers.

-During the Islanders' annual holiday tour of area hospitals, a nurse ripped them directly. According to defenseman James Wisniewski, she said, "We were visiting sick kids and giving them gifts and one of the nurses there was really pretty rude to me, Doug Weight and Andy MacDonald. She's a season-ticket holder and saying, 'Nobody wants to go to your games; you've been giving tickets away for free.'"

-Islanders defenseman Mike Mottau (eye) was given medical clearance to practice for the first time since being injured Nov. 21.

Northeast Division

-Drew Stafford's trick led the Sabres to a 3-2 win against the Bruins. Teammate Derek Roy recorded three assists while Ryan Miller made 32 saves in the victory.

Southeast Division

-A shootout goal by Victor Hedman gave the Lightning a 2-1 win against the Thrashers. Mike Smith made 27 saves in the victory. Atlanta has lost eight consecutive games to Tampa Bay.

-A good look at Hedman beating Atlanta's Ondrej Pavelec:

-Two goals by Tuomo Ruutu led the Hurricanes to a 4-3 win against at Florida. Teammates Sergei Samsonov and Jeff Skinner each recorded two assists while Justin Peters made 21 saves in the victory.

-Carolina's Joni Pitkanen > Florida's Dennis Wideman:

-Panthers general manager and former Penguins defenseman Dale Tallon accused the agent of defenseman Erik Grudbrandon of being greedy. Both parties failed to reach a contract agreement in the preseason.

-In an effort to spark ticket sales, the Thrashers staged a fake arrest of their mascot Trash:

-Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman chatted with the agent for free agent goaltender Evgeni Nabokov.

-With forward Boyd Gordon expected to miss one to two weeks due to a "lower-body" injury, the Capitals recalled forwards Andrew Gordon and Jay Beagle from Hershey of the AHL and demoted Brian Fahey to Hershey.

Central Division

-A hat trick and an assist by captain Nicklas Lidstrom led the Red Wings to a 5-2 win against the rival Blues. Henrik Zetterberg recorded four assists for Detroit while teammate Danny Cleary netted a goal and two assists. Jimmy Howard made 19 saves in the victory.

-St. Louis' Alexander Steen got some serious tourque on this shot:

-Amazingly, Lidstrom had never recorded a hat trick before in his 19-year career.

-Blues defenseman Erik Johnson left the game in the first injury after injuring his right knee, the same knee which sidelined him for all of the 2008-09 season.

-Anders Lindback made 25 saves for the Predators in a 3-2 win against the Sharks. Nashville has won four consecutive games.

-San Jose's Logan Couture chose an odd time to start an impromptu break dancing competition:

-Happy times for the Predators. Not so much for San Jose's Antti Niemi:

-Intense times for Nashville captain Shea Weber:

-The Blackhawks recalled forward Jeremy Morin from Rockford of the AHL.

-Blackhawks forward Jake Dowell is good people.

-The Blue Jackets activated forward Kristian Huselius (ankle) from injured reserve and placed forward Derek MacKenzie (groin) on injured reserve.

Northwest Division

-A hat trick by Tomas Fleischmann helped the Avalanche win at Chicago, 4-3. Teammate Matt Duchene recorded two assists while Craig Anderson made 35 saves in the victory. Bryan Bickell had a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks.

-U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore A. Giunta, who recently was awarded the Medal of Honor, was honored prior to the game.

-"I'm having fun playing with these young guys. There's energy all over the place." - Fleischmann who was recently traded from the Capitals.

-Stalberg left the game in the second period due to an "upper-body" injury.

-A hat trick by Ryan Kesler gave the Canucks a 3-2 overtime win against the Blue Jackets. Roberto Luongo made 28 saves in the victory.

-Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf will play in Calgary tonight for the first time since the Flames dealt him to Toronto last season.

Pacific Division

-An overtime goal by Ryan Getzlaf gave the Ducks a 2-1 win at Washington. Jonas Hiller made 32 saves in the victory. The Capitals have lost seven consecutive games.

-Former Blues/Coyotes/Kings/Stars forward Ladislav Nagy has joined Modo of the Elitserien in Sweden.

-Former Whalers/Blues/Lightning/Islanders forward Robert Petrovicky has joined Dinamo Riga of the KHL.

-Today would've been the 100th birthday of former Pittsburgh Hornets forward Eddie Convey.
