-The Wheeling Nailers named Andrew Lord as their captain. Kris Vernarsky, Andrew Orpik, and David Urquhart will serve as alternate captains.

-Happy 56th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Tom Edur (right). Acquired midway through the 1977-78 season in a deal which sent Dennis Owchar to the Colorado Rockies, Edur's Penguins career amounted to a pretty productive 58 games and 43 points during that campaign. In the 1978 offseason, he retired at the age of 23 to devote himself to religon having become a Jehovah's Witness.

-Happy 29th birthday to former Penguins forward Chris Minard. A free agent signing in the 2007 offseason, Minard spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins. As a rookie in 2007-08, Mindard saw action in 15 games and scored two points. He followed that up in 2008-09 by playing in 20 games and recording three points. In the 2009 offseason, Minard joined the Oilers as a free agent. He is currently a member of the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings' AHL affiliate.

Atlantic Division

-Flyers overlord Ed Snider donated $5.5 million to renovate three rinks in the city of Philadelphia.

-Tough and plucky Isabella Kowalski of Philadelphia might be the only Flyers fan you can feel good about.

Northeast Division

-Tim Thomas made 34 saves for the Bruins in a 3-2 win against the Rangers. Former Penguins forward Mark Recchi scored the game-winning goal. It was his 1,497th career point. Fire Ray Shero.

-Brandon Dubinsky and the Rangers debuted their 85th anniversary third jerseys:

-Stop us if this sounds familiar. Rangers forward and former Penguin Erik Christensen passed up a shot on a crucial two-on-one and forced a pass which led to no goal.

-Toronto goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere is expected to be sidelined one to two weeks due to a groin injury.

-"He’s a guy that’s come in the league and hasn’t earned respect." - Flyers captain Mike Richards on Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban.

Southeast Division

-Martin St. Louis had a goal and two assists for the Lightning in a 4-2 defeat of the Islanders. Steven Stamkos added a goal and an assist while Dan Ellis made 34 saves in the victory. Former Penguins prospect Matt Moulson led New York with a goal and an assist. Fire Ray Shero. Jack Capuano dropped his first game as the Islanders' head coach while his team loss its 11th consecutive contest.

-A hat trick and two assists by Eric Staal led the Hurricanes to a 7-1 rout of the Senators. Chad LaRose added two goals and two assists for Carolina while teammate Tim Gleason contributed a goal and an assist. Cam Ward made 23 saves in the victory.

-Former Penguin Matt Bradley and Alexander Semin each netted a goal and an assist for the Capitals in a 4-2 defeat of the Sabres. Jason Chimera recorded two assists for Washington while Michal Neuvirth made 31 saves in the victory.

-Buffalo's Jason Pominville unleashing a shot on Neuvirth:

-Buffalo's Thomas Vanek, Washington's Jeff Schultz and Neuvirth all kept their eyes on this puck:

-Washington's Mike Knuble and Buffalos' Adrej Sekera kicked up some ice:

-Tomas Vokoun made 38 saves for the Panthers in a 2-1 defeat of the Thrashers. Atlanta has lost three consecutive games.

-Thrashers defenseman Dustin Byfuglien left the game in the first period with a "lower-body" injury.

-The Hurricanes acquired defenseman Ian White and forward Brett Sutter from the Flames in exchange for defenseman Anton Babchuk and forward Tom Kostopoulos. Sutter is the son of Flames general manager Darryl Sutter and the cousin of Hurricanes forward Brandon Sutter.

Central Division

-Two goals by Danny Cleary helped the Red Wings rout the rival Blues, 7-3. Brian Rafalski recorded three assists for Detroit while teammates Justin Abdelkader and Drew Miller each contributed a goal and assist. Jimmy Howard made 33 saves in the victory. Andy McDonald led St. Louis with a goal and two assists.

-Amazing how he never did this last spring against the Penguins. Blues goaltender Jaroslav Halak managed to "score" on himself last night:

-We don't want to accuse Detroit coach Mike Babcock of being smug, but the "scoreboard" sign was a little much:

-Red Wings general manager Ken Holland won his 600th career game.

-Marty Turco made 18 saves and led the Blackhawks to a 5-0 shutout of the Oilers. Captain Jonathan Toews had a hat trick for Chicago while teammate Patrick Sharp recorded a goal and an assist.

-Two goals by Rick Nash led the Blue Jackets to a 5-3 win at Los Angeles. Andrew Murray contributed a goal and an assist for Columbus while Derek Dorsett recorded two assists. Steve Mason made 33 saves in the victory. Drew Doughty netted assists on all three of the Kings' goals.

Northwest Division

-An overtime goal by Kevin Porter gave the Avalanche a 4-3 win against the Sharks. Chris Stewart had a goal and an assist for Colorado while teammate John-Michael Liles recorded two assists. Peter Budaj made 40 saves in the victory. Ryane Clowe led San Jose with two assists.

-Happy times for Porter and Stewart:

-The Avalanche won despite being outshot, 40-16.

-Antti Miettinen's overtime goal gave the Wild a 2-1 win against the Ducks. Niklas Backstrom made 27 saves in the victory.

-Vancouver's Sedins? Believe it or not, they're brothers.

-After yesterday's trade with the Hurricanes, the Flames will save $903,670 on the salary cap.

Pacific Division

-A goal and an assist by Martin Hanzal led the Coyotes to a 3-1 defeat of the Flames. Adrian Aucoin recorded two assists for Phoenix while Ilya Bryzgalov made 39 saves in the win.

-The Sharks recalled defenseman Mike Moore from Worcester of the AHL.

-The healthy and success of Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen this season has been a pleasant surprise.

-The Stars signed undrafted free agent Matt Fraser to a three-year entry-level contract.

-The Kings demoted forward Brayden Schenn to Manchester of the AHL for conditioning purposes.

Smythe Division

-Happy 82nd birthday to former Pittsburgh Hornets forward Rudy Migay.
