Penguins demote Tangradi... to Wheeling?!? -10-06-10

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

Feel free to explain this one to us.

The Penguins demoted Eric Tangradi (right), who had been laying along side Evgeni Malkin and Mike Comrie all throughout training camp, to Wheeling of the ECHL.

In his place, goaltender Patrick Killeen was recalled from Wheeling.

In five preseason games, Tangradi, 21, recorded two assists, was a plus-2 and recorded two penalty minutes.

Killeen, 20, did not play in the preseason.

Additionally, Jordan Staal (foot) was placed on the injured-non roster list.

So for now, the Penguins "final" roster looks like this:

Forwards - Craig Adams, Arron Asham, Mike Comrie, Matt Cooke, Sidney Crosby, Pascal Dupuis, Eric Godard, Tyler Kennedy, Chris Kunitz, Mark Letestu, Evgeni Malkin, Casey Pierro-Zabotel-*, Mike Rupp, Jordan Staal-**, Maxime Talbot.

Defensemen - Deryk Engelland, Alex Goligoski, Alex Grant-*, Kris Letang, Ben Lovejoy, Paul Martin, Zbynek Michalek, Brook Orpik

Goaltenders - Marc-Andre Fleury, Brent Johnson, Patrick Killeen

*-Injured reserve
**-Injured-non roster list

Update: Penguins management has declined comment in regards to this move (PG+).

EN Says: You got us.

This is pure speculation, but something tells us that this is related to the salary cap. The Ducks used to do this a few years ago with Bobby Ryan when he was a prospect. They would move him back and forth between the Duck's NHL roster and the roster of their ECHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.

But again, that is pure speculation on our behalf.
