GOALTENDERS
Chris Osgood
Jimmy Howard
12:20: Mark Letestu gains the offensive zone, goes through the right faceoff circle, goes deep to the left of the cage, pulls Osgood out and centers a pass to Chris Kunitz in the slot. Rafalski is a step slow and fails to prevent the play from forming. Kunitz punches in the easiest goal of his life. Letestu and Eric Tangradi get assists. Penguins 2-0.
3:11: Tyler Kennedy and Eric Godard move up ice on on a two-on-one against Lidstrom. Lidstrom kneels down and takes away the pass from Kennedy. From the left circle, Kennedy puts a wrister off the near post. Do you even need a goaltender to defend that duo?
0:46: On a power play, Malkin blasts a wild one-timer from the right circle. It takes off on him and hits Kunitz up high in the left elbow. Kunitz pretty much defended himself from getting decapitated.
0:14: Still on a power play. Goligoski controls a puck at the left point. He fakes a shot, pumps then fires a slapper towards the net. It hits Kunitz in front and deflects to the left of the cage. Comrie is there. He kicks the puck from his left foot to his stick and punches it behind Osgood. Fantastic "soccer" move by Comrie to control that puck. Goligoski and Kunitz get assists. Penguins 3-1.
0:00: End of period. Penguins 3-1.
FIRST INTERMISSION
-Comrie continues to look like the best free agent signing of the preseason. But before we get too excited, let's see what he can do in a game of consequence.
-We don't know how Mark Letestu doesn't start the season on the NHL roster unless he gets injured between now and Wednesday.
-Kunitz had a nice net-front presence.
-The Red Wing have a 10-7 lead in shots.
-Datsyuk, Kunitz, Comrie and Kris Letang each lead the game with two shots.
-Goligoski leads the game with 9:03 of ice time.
-Rafalski leads the Red Wings with 7:20.
-Faceoffs are tied, 9-9 (50 percent).
-Helm is 3 for 3 (100 percent).
-Comrie is 4 for 6 (67 percent).
-No one has more than oen blocked shot.
-Former major league baseball star Don Sutton is apparently working for a Detroit-area law firm:

SECOND PERIOD
19:18: Osgood misplays a rebound. Comrie has a chance for a hat trick put pushes the puck wide through the crease.
17:37: Off a bad line change by Detroit, Kennedy has a chance for a breakaway. He goes wide to the right on Osgood, has Osgood beat and clunks the shot off the near post. Kennedy is snake bit.
15:20: Michalek dishes a puck from the right point to Goligoski on the left point. Goligoski winds up and cranks a laser of a slapper on net. Tangradi is standing in front and completely screens out Osgood from seeing the puck. The puck blows by Osgood on the glove side. Osgood had no chance on that. Michalek and Malkin get assists. Penguins 4-1.
7:53: The Aaron Downey-Jesse Boulerice from earlier in the preseason is referenced:

6:16: Kunitz and Franzen mix it up after Kunitz took out Filppula with what looked like a bit of a slewfoot. Kunitz get a minor for tripping and roughing. Franzen gets sent off for roughing.
4:43: Letang and Holmstrom hack the daylights out of each other with their sticks in front of Fleury. They get offsetting minors. Holmstrom mouths off to an offiical then sort throws a towel at him from the penalty box. That gets him booted from the game. Four-on-four. Letang has been showing a litte bit of a nastier edge this preseason.
2:58: Letestu chips a puck into the crease from the left wing. Godard nearly knees it into the net but Osgood holds it out. How do you keep Letestu off the roster when he nearly gets a goal for Godard?
0:00: End of period. Penguins 4, Red Wings 1.
SECOND INTERMISSION
-The Red Wings seem as interested in playing this game as we do in learning the Dewey Decimal System.
-Tangradi's screen was the best we've seen from a Penguin since Ryan Malone's days.
-We still thinkg Letestu will be on the NHL roster to start the season before Tangradi.
-Letang's growth seems to continue as he's becoming a little nastier.
-The Penguins have a 17-16 edge in shots.
-Goligoski, Martin, Kunitz, Comrie, Letang, Datsyuk, Miller, Zetterberg and Kronwall each lead the game with two shots.
-Martin leads the game with 16:29 of ice time.
-Datsyuk leads the Red Wings with 13:31.
-The Red Wings lead in faceoffs, 21-17 (55 percent).
-Talbot is 5 for 8 (63 percent).
-Helm is 6 for 10 (60 percent).
-No one has more than one blocked shot.
THIRD PEROD
17:39: Datsyuk pokes a puck in the slot high over the Penguins' net. Fleury appears to get a piece of it.
17:09: Ericsson makes a brutal turnover in his own zone near the right circle along the boards. And unfortunately for him, he turns it over to Evgeni Malkin, arguably, the most dangerous player on the ice. Malkin says xxx, turns and snaps off an immediate wrister which appears to glance off the left skate of Osgood an into the net. Ugly play by Ericsson. The goal is unassisted. Ericsson could make a case for one. Penguins 5-1.
16:38: On a delayed penalty, Datsyuk leads a rush up ice one-on-one against Despres. Both kind of take a tumble and slide into Fleury. The puck is loose to the right of the net. Mike Modano swoop in from behind the cage and backhands it off Fleury's right skate and into the cage. That was kind of ugly. Datsyuk gets the only assist. Penguins 5-2.
{youtube width="480" height="385"}QFxdLT1jHRU{/youtube}
5:09: Ben Lovejoy moves up the right wing and cranks a big slapper on net. Osgood is square to the shooter and eats it up.
0:00: End of game. Penguins 5, Red Wings 2.
POSTGAME

-Not a lot to really get too excited about with this game. It was a preseason game in which the Red Wings barely competed. They simply weren't interested int his game. Their sole goal was to avoid injuries.
-Mark Letestu and Eric Tangradi made their cases to stick on the roster. Letestu still has the edge in our book.
-It would be a stretch to say Despres or Lovejoy stood out.
-Comrie was fantastic as he has been all preseason.
-The Penguins ended up with a 25-24 lead in shots.
-Kunitz, Letang, Datsyuk and Kronwall each led the game with three shots.
-Michalek led the game with 23:53 of ice time.
-Kronwall led the Red Wings with 21:50.
-The Red Wings controlled faceoffs, 35-27 (56 percent).
-Talbot was 9 for 14 (64 percent).
-Modano was 5 for 8 (63 percent).
-Lovejoy led the game with three blocked shots.
-Kronwall led the Red Wings with two.
