Penguins

-How important is Eric Godard (above) to the Penguins?

-Don't expect Arron Asham ("upper body"), Sidney Crosby (hip) or Brooks Oprik (groin) to play in Detroit today.

-Dan Bylsma hasn't made a decision on the team's second alternate captain yet (PG+).

-Jason DeSantis scored the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' only goal in a 5-1 preseason loss to the rival Hershey Bears.

Atlantic Division

-Rick DiPietro made 25 saves in a 2-1 defeat of the rival Devils. The Islanders had a split squad. Their other team played the Canadiens in Quebec City.

-Happy times for the Islanders. Not so much for New Jersey's David Clarkson:

-New York's Mike Mottau > New Jersey's Mattias Tedenby:

-New York's Trevor Gilles and his intense fu manchu:

-The Devils demoted forward Nick Palmieri to Albany of the AHL.

-The Islanders demoted forwards Justin DiBenedetto, Micheal Haley, Rob Hisey, Jesse Joensuu, Mark Katic, Tomas Marcinko, Rhett Rakhshani, David Ullstrom, Jeremy Yablonski, defensemen Dylan Reese, Travis Hamonic and goaltender Mikko Koskinen to Bridgeport of the AHL and released forwards Dean McAmmond, Krys Kolanos, defenseman Jed Ortmeyer, Anders Eriksson and goaltender Manny Legace.

Northeast Division

-Zack Smith had a hat trick and assist for the Senators in an 8-5 defeat of the Rangers. Teammate Chris Kelly also had a hat trick while Jesse Winchester and former Penguin Jarkko Ruutu each contributed a goal and an assist for Ottawa. Fire Ray Shero. Pascal Leclaire made 25 saves in the win. Todd White led New York with two goals.

-Rangers goon Derek Boogaard hit Senators forward Chris Neil in a bad spot:

-New York's Martin Biron had issues with this puck:

-Leclaire was mesmorized by the peculiar right handed head tapping celebration of White and former Penguin Ruslan Fedotenko:

-Tomas Kaberle and Kris Versteeg each had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs in a 4-2 defeat of the Red Wings. Teammate Phil Kessel contributed three assists while Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 22 saves in the victory.

-Sabres goaltender Patrick Lalime (groin) and forward Thomas Vanek (head/neck) are dinged up.

-The Sabres demoted forwards Mark Mancari, Luke Adam, Paul Byron, defensemen T.J. Brennan, Drew Schiestel, Dennis Persson and goatender David Leggio to  Portland of the AHL, released forward Mark Parrish and returned forward Zack Kassian (Windsor - OHL) to his junior team.

Southeast Division

-Two goals by Steven Stamkos (above) led the Lightning to a 4-1 defeat of the rival Panthers. Vincent Lecavalier added a goal and an assist while Mike Smith made 20 saves in the victory.

-Tampa Bay coach Guy Boucher tried to be subtle when asking assistant coach Wayne Fleming if he had brushed his teeth this morning:

Central Division

-Nikita Filatov had two goals for the Blue Jackets in a 4-3 defeat of the Thrashers. Kristian Huselius and Antoine Vermette each contributed a goal and an assist while teammate Rick Nash recorded two assists. Steve Mason made 29 saves in the victory. Tobias Enstrom led Atlanta with a goal and two assists.

-An overtime goal by B.J. Crombeen gave the Blues a 4-3 win against the Stars. Teammate Alexander Steen added two assists while Jaroslav Halak made 19 saves in the victory. Matt Niskanen led Dallas with a goal and two assists.

-Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell (right) will be sidelined four to five weeks due to a sprained right knee.

-Chicago demoted goaltender Hannu Toivonen to Rockford of the AHL.

-The Blue Jackets demoted forwards Tomas Kubalik, Maksim Mayorov, defensemen Grant Clitsome, Nick Holden, John Moore and  David Savard to Springfield of the AHL, placed forwards Tom Sestito and Ben Guite on waivers, released forward Dan Fritsche and returned forward Ryan Johansen (Portland - WHL) to his junior team.

Northwest Division

-With 920 career points, Flames captain Jarome Iginla (right) has a shot at hitting 1,000 points before the end of this season.

-The Wild officially signed unrestricted goaltender Jose Theodore, formerly of the Capitals, to a one-year contract worth $1.1 million.

-Minnesota is opening the season in Finland. One of the team's practices took place on a rink three stories underground.

-The Canucks placed defenseman Shane O'Brien and enforcer Darcy Hordichuk on waivers.

Pacific Division

-Goals by Drew Doughty, Anze Kopitar (above) and Ryan Smith gave the Kings a 3-2 win against the Avalanche in Las Vegas.

-Colorado's Craig Anderson had issues with this puck:

-Joe Thornton and Devin Setoguchi had regulation goals for the Sharks in a 3-2 shootout win against Adler Mannheim in Germany.

-The Coyotes recalled goaltender Al Montoya from San Antonio of the AHL.

-The Stars demoted forward Tom Wandell to Texas of the AHL for conditioning purposes.
