-The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguind demoted defensemen Drew Dobson, Peter Merth, Nick Tuzzolino, forward Marc Rechlicz and goaltender Nevin Hamilton to the Wheeling Nailers and released forward Taylor Vichorek and defenseman Eric Tallent.

-Former Penguins forward Miroslav Satan has joined HS Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia.

-The translated headline from the story on the team's Web site was a little over the top:

-We're assuming Michel Therrien isn't moonlighting as the Webmaster for this team.

-Happy 53rd birthday to former Penguins defenseman Gordie Roberts (right, with a slightly more celebrated teammate). Acquired prior to the 1990-91 season in a deal which sent a draft pick to the Blues, Roberts spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins. In 1990-91, Roberts appeared in 61 games and contributed 18 points. In that spring's postseason, Roberts appeared in all 24 of the team's games, recorded three points and helped the franchise claim its first Stanley Cup title. Roberts played in 73 games in 1991-92 and scored 24 points. In the 1992 playoffs, Roberts saw action in 19 games and recorded two assists as the team successfully defended the Stanley Cup. In the 1992 offseason, he joined the Bruins as a free agent. In 134 regular season games with the Penguins, Roberts scored 39 points. In 43 posteason games with the franchise, he scored five points. In 1999, Roberts was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.

-Happy 26th birthday to former Penguins forward Jonathan Filewich. A third-round pick in 2006, Filewich's entire NHL career amounted to five games and no points with the Penguins in 2007-08. Midway through the 2008-09 season, he was traded to the Blues for future considerations. He is currently a member of Medvescak Zagreb in Austria.

-Happy 47th birthday to former Penguins forward Tim Hrynewich (right). A second-round pick in 1983, Hrynewich spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins. As a rookie in 1982-83, Hrynewich appeared in 30 games and scored five points. In 1983-84, he played in 25 games and contributed nine points. Prior to the 1985-86 season, Hrynewich was traded to the Oilers along with Marty McSorley and Craig Muni in exchange for Gilles Meloche. In 55 games with the Penguins, Hrynewich scored 14 points.

-Happy 64th birthday to former Pittsburgh Hornets and Penguins defenseman Doug Barrie. Acquired prior to the 1968-69 season in a deal which sent cash to the Red Wings, Barrie's Penguins career amounted to eight games and two points that campaign. After spending the entire 1969-70 season with the Baltimore Clippers of the AH, Barrie was claimed by the Sabres in the 1970 expansion draft.

Atlantic Division

-Two assists by Jeff Carter helped the Flyers beat the Sabres, 3-1. Brian Boucher (above) made 32 saves in the victory.

-Shootout goals by Derek Stepan and former Penguin Erik Christensen gave the Rangers a 5-4 win against the Senators. Brian Boyle had a goal and an assist for New York in regulation while teammate Brandon Prust added two assists. Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves in the victory. Jason Spezza led Ottawa with two goals and an assist.

-Brandon Sutter (above, with Atlanta's Bryan Little and Ondrej Pavelec) scored two goals, including one in overtime, and led the Hurricanes to a 2-1 win against the Thrashers. Cam Ward made 30 saves in the victory.

-An overtime goal by Mike Lundin gave the Lightning a 2-1 win at Florida. Teammate Simon Gagne added a goal and an assist while Mike Smith made 29 saves in the win.

-Tampa Bay captain Vincent Lecavalier had a heart to heart with teammate Steven Stamkos on the Mentawai Long-tailed Giant Rat:

Central Division

-Two goals by Jiri Hudler led Detroit to a 7-3 rout of the Maple Leafs. Teammates Johan Franzen and Niklas Kronwall each added a goal and an assist while Thomas McCollum made 16 saves to earn the win. Phil Kessel led Toronto with a goal and an assist.

-We don't want to say Toronto's Carl Gunnarsson invaded the personal space of Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom, but...:

-The Red Wings recalled forwards Willie Coetzee, Francis Pare, Tomas Tatar and McCollum from Grand Rapids of the AHL.

-Red Wings forward Todd Bertuzzi is dealing with a back ailment.

-Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell left last night's game with a wonky right leg.

-Chicago forward Jack Skille is dealing with an "upper-body" injury.

-The Blackhawks demoted forwards Kyle Beach, Igor Makarov, Brandon Pirri, Ben Smith and defenseman Brian Connelly to Rockford  of the AHL.

-Blues defenseman Nikita Nikitin will be sidelined two to four weeks due to a broken wrist.

Northwest Division

-A goal and an assist by Ryan Kesler led the Canucks to a 4-2 win at Anaheim. Cory Schneider (above) made 23 saves in the victory.

-Former Canadiens/Lightning/Maple Leafs/Avalanche forward Darcy Tucker officially retired. We assume Jarkko Ruutu was saddened by the news:

-Former NHL referee Kerry Fraser called for the league to create a universal rule on head shots totally eliminating any sort of blow to the head.
