Radish sprouts and rain, what a wonderful combination

I planted some radishes a couple weeks ago and I purposely sowed them thickly. I did some thinning this morning and these are going into a salad tonight with other greens from the garden. Pulling something this fresh and wonderful from the garden, this late in the season is really a treat. I'll be picking them again in late March or early April, they will be welcome relief from winter. I sow those in February in a bed I prepare soon; I'll fill you in on that when the time comes.

You still have time to throw in some radish, lettuce and arugula seeds. Worse case scenario, you'll be feasting on tender thinnings that only gardeners get to enjoy, then pick the survivors next spring. I'm going to chop these radish greens up, combine them with arugula, lettuce, Malabar spinach and tomatoes all from the garden. And then it’s a spritz of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, grated cheese and a pinch of sea salt. This simple heavenly salad will greet my wife when she comes through the door from another day of work.

I found some cool weather plants at Garden Dreams Urban Farm and Nursery, but I'm not sure what's left, give them a call if you're interested, 412-638-3333. I haven't found anyone else selling greens for fall planting, if you know of any please list them in the comments at the end of the blog.

How about this rain? It came right after I had planted some of those spring transplants. It will make planting bulbs, trees, shrubs and perennials more palatable; this is just what they all need.

Don't stop, if we have a mild start to the season, there might be another month or so of heavy harvest, followed by some slower picking when it gets really cold.
