Northeast Division

-Former Penguin Luca Caputi (above) had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs in a 4-1 defeat of the Senators. Fire Ray Shero. Teammates Clarke MacArthur, Francois Beauchemin and Jesse Blacker each recorded two assists while James Reimer made seven saves to earn the win.

-Toronto's Mike Komisarek > Ottawa's Francis Lessard:

-Sadly, "Pierre" McGuire survived the encounter.

-Two goals by Patrice Bergeron led the Bruins to a 4-2 win at Montreal. Teammate Mart Bartkowski, a Pittsburgh native, added two assists while Tuukka Rask stopped 36 saves to earn the win.

-Things have changed quite a bit since Bruins forward Mark Recchi's first training camp two decades ago with the Penguins.

-The Bruins demoted goaltenders Adam Courchaine, Michael Hutchinson, defenseman Ryan Donald, forwards Levi Nelson, Tyler Randell, Antoine Roussel and Jordan Smotherman to Providence of the AHL and returned defenseman Cody Wild (Kitchener - OHL) to his junior team.

-Defenseman Josh Gorges has developed into the most reliable player on the Canadiens' roster.

-Ottawa defenseman and former Penguin Sergei Gonchar is playing for his third national captial in his professional career.

-The Senators returned forwards Jakub Culek (Rimouski - QMJHL) and Mark Stone (Brandon - WHL) to their junior teams.

Southeast Division

-A hat trick by Matt Hendricks led the Capitals to a 6-2 win at Columbus. Tomas Fleischmann added two goals and an assist while teammate Alexander Semin recorded three assists. Semyon Varlamov made 20 saves in the victory.

-Simon Gagne had two goals and an assist for the Lightning in a 4-2 win against the Blackhawks in Winnipeg.

-The Jets being popular:

-The Thrashers demoted forwards Angelo Esposito, Michael Forney, Danick Paquette, Jared Ross, defensemen Paul Postma and Mike Siklenka to Chicago of the AHL. The team also released forward Andre Deveaux and defensemen Kyle McLaren from their tryout contracts. Esposito, who missed the last three practices due to a "lower-body" injury, is a former Penguins prospect.

-The Capitals signed goaltender Michal Neuvirth to a two-year contract extension worth a total of $2.3 million. He will have a salary cap hit of $1.15 million.

Central Division

-David Perron had a goal and an assist for the Blues in a 5-1 win at Minnesota. David Backes added two assist while Ben Bishop made 23 saves in the victory.

-Minnesota Justin Falk knocked Perron off the puck here:

-Red Wings defenseman Derek Meech suffered an unspecified head injury last night.

-The Predators appear to be in hot water over their arena lease.

Northwest Division

-Former Penguin Ryan Whitney recorded three assists for the Oilers in a 3-2 defeat of the Canucks. Fire Ray Shero.

-Vancouver's Peter Schaefer blew this slapper off the glove of Edmonton's Devan Dubnyk:

-The Wild failed to sell out a game - preseason, regular season or postseason - for the first time in franchise history.

Pacific Division

-Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and an assist for the Ducks in a 5-2 defeat of the rival Sharks. Teammate Matt Beleskey added two assists while Jonas Hiller recorded a victory by stopping 19 shots.

-Anaheim's Sheldon Brookbank and San Jose's Jamie McGinn had issues:

-Sharks goaltender Antero Niittymaki got of to a shaky start allowing four goals on 12 shots.

-A goal and an assist by Justin Williams led the Kings to a 4-2 win against the Avalanche. Jarrett Stoll added two assists for Los Angeles while Jonathan Bernier made 21 saves in the victory.

-Colorado's David Koci and Los Angeles' John Zeiler had issues:

-Kings forward and Pittsburgh native John Zeiler drew two penalties out of Colorado captain Adam Foote.

-The Stars returned goaltender Jack Campbell (Windsor - CHL) to his junior team. Campbell was the team's first-round pick this summer.

Adams Division

-Former Rangers/Kings forward John Tripp has joined the Hanover Scorpions in Germany.
