Penguins sign Comrie - 09-03-10

The Penguins have signed unrestricted free agent forward Mike Comrie (right), formerly of the Oilers, to a one-year deal worth $500,000.

In 43 games last season, Comrie (5-foot-10, 185 pounds) scored 21 points (13 goals, eight assists) and was a minus-nine.

Comrie, 29, has spent nine seasons in the NHL and has also played for the Senators, Islanders, Coyotes and Flyers. He was third-round pick of the Oilers in 1999.

Away from the ice, Comrie is famous for being the spouse of entertainer Hilary Duff.

EN Says: Even though Comrie comes as a bargain, we just don't see the sense in this move. Yes, Jordan Staal's wonky foot is cause for concern and that probably the prime motivating factor in Ray Shero bringing in Comrie, but it seems to us that the Penguins already have some internal options such as Mark Letestu available to pick up Staal's minutes should he miss some time.

As far as Comrie goes, there was time when he was a legit top six forward in this league. He used to post 30-goal and 60-point seasons but half a decade ago. He has, or had, fantastic skills with the puck, but has been riddled with inconsistency throughout his career, even when he was posting nice numbers.

He does offer versatility as he is capable of playing all three forward positions. Additionally, he does offer a presence on the power play and is a solid skater. And he can help the Penguins out in shootouts as he is 6 for 13 in his career (31.6 percent).

Comrie is hardly a faceoff specialist as he only attempted 47 draws last season.

Overall, this is a move with low-risk, high-reward potential.

And while he's hardly an overly physical player, Comrie has been known to drop the gloves from time to time with smaller players in his weight class.
