Rangers sign Biron - 07-01-10

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

The Rangers have signed unrestricted free agent goaltender Martin Biron for two years with an annual salary cap hit of $900,000.

Last season with the rival Islanders, Biron served as a backup to starter Dwayne Roloson. In 29 games, Biron was 9-14-4 with a 3.27 goals against average, .896 save percentage and one shutout.

EN Says: Good move for the Rangers. They have ridden starter Henrik Lundqvist too much over the past four seasons and it really showed at times last season as Lundqvist just looked fatigued. And without an NHL-caliber back up, the Rangers simply had few options when it came to spelling Lundqvist.

Biron may have been the best back-up on the market and should Lundqvist not be available to play due to injury or any othe reason, Biron is someone the Rangers can be comfortable with in net for any length of time.
