Well... there's at least one team in the Atlantic Division adding defensemen.
The Flyers acquired defenseman Andrej Meszaros from the Lightning in exchange for a second-round pick. The year of the pick was not announced.
In 81 games, Meszaros, 6-foot-2, 218 pounds. recorded 14 points (six goals, 14 assists) and was a minus-17.
EN Says: The Flyers were desperate to add some depth on the blue line. That's why they pulled last month's trade to acquire the signing rights to Dan Hamhuis. When negotiations with Hamhuis failed, they moved him to Pittsburgh.
This trade is a bit of a head-scratcher though. Meszaros makes a lot of money (His salary cap hit next season will be $4 million) for a guy the Flyer expect to be a No. 4 defenseman at best. And considering the Flyers are still trying to find a goaltender as well as trying to re-sign restricted free agent defenseman Braydon Coburn.
Additionally, Meszaros is under contract for four more seasons.
There was a time when Meszaros was seen as a top two blueliner, but he won't realize that potential with players like Chris Pronger and Kimmo Timonen ahead of him on the depth chart.
Tampa Bay is clearly in a re-build mode. While Meszaros is young (24) dropping his big salary is a step in the right direction.
