Penguins select Beau Bennett in first round - 06-25-10

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

The Penguins selected right wing Beau Bennett in the first round of the NHL draft (No. 20 overall).

Bennett, 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, played last season with the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League. He is expected to play for the University of Denver next season.

Last season with Penticton, he appeared in 56 games and scored 120 points (41 goals, 79 assists).

A native of California, Bennett is the highest drafted native of the Golden State in NHL history.

A scouting report on Bennett from Bruce Ciskie of AOL Fanhouse:

Bennett is the only player from the British Columbia Hockey League to make the top 30. He's a highly-skilled player who fell through the major junior cracks, and didn't get a shot at the USHL. Don't mistake any of that for a lack of talent.

"A Gardena, Calif., native, Bennett averaged over two points per game for the Vees this season. His 120 points led the league, and he scored 41 goals in 56 games. He is a responsible player, but he has to work on his defensive zone game a bit. Where he's at his best is around the opposing net. Bennett is usually found in front, using his nose for the puck to score both the pretty goals and the tough ones.

In the offensive zone, he is a gifted playmaker as well as a scorer.

Committed to the University of Denver, Bennett will have to spend a year or two in college, as his 175-pound frame won't hold up if he doesn't do something about it. Expect Bennett to struggle a bit in college while he tries to figure out the faster, more physical game he'll find there, and while he tries to add some muscle.

He's a talented prospect, but he's too skinny to make it in the WCHA, much less a pro league."
