Below, while his teammates celebrate during a television interview, Sewickley Academy's Tom Droney shows his struggles dealing with a stomach virus.
Sewickley Academy won the state Class A championship with a 43-35 victory against Reading Central Catholic today. Sewickley standout guard Tom Droney struggled, scoring only 11 points. He had four of his shots blocked. But there was a reason for his struggles. He was sick.
"I threw up about 10 or times this morning," Droney said. "I just didn't have that energy or that oomph on the court. I couldn't keep anything down. I didn't play well, but my teammates stepped up for me."
Droney said he got sick just before game time and also at halftime. For a while this morning, Sewickley coach Win Palmer wondered if Droney would even play. Droney, a Davidson recruit, finished with almost 1,900 career points.
Tyler Palmer came through with 15 points, all on 3-pointers, for Sewickley Academy. The Indians' defense also was excellent, holding Reading Central Catholic to nine points in the secon dhalf.
