Can you imagine the absurdity? A huge oil company pulls some fast ones, cuts some corners. Result: Big oil's "Chernobyl" on the Gulf of Mexico, and columnist Charles Krauthammer blames environmentalists (of course, that is code for "liberals") ("The Gulf Gushes While Our President Dreams," June 19).

Maybe he should think back to one of our most worthless presidents ever, aka Ronald Reagan, who did his best to undo everything Jimmy Carter tried to accomplish environmentally. Item: Mr. Carter makes a speech and alludes to facts pertaining to our gluttonous oil dependence and how dangerous it is to the security of our country. He puts up solar panels on the White House roof -- a symbolic gesture of where we must start heading as a country.

President "Feelgood" comes into office and removes them. Just think, if we had started lessening our dependence on fossil fuels 30 years ago and moved toward renewable sources of energy where we might be at this juncture. I'm certain that if a disaster of this magnitude happened during Bush's reign (either the elected one, or the appointed one), the president's handling of the crisis would be just ducky and would still be the fault of those evil liberal environmentalists.

Mr. Krauthammer, here is your homework assignment (I know you can do it): Write a column blaming President Bill Clinton for the Gulf oil disaster. After all, he is from Arkansas, which is only one state above Louisiana.

A question I find most difficult to answer personally is why I even bother to read Mr. K's conservative drivel.
