Joni was right
With millions of gallons of oil hemorrhaging daily into the Gulf of Mexico, Marcellus Shale oil drilling rigs exploding in West Virginia and Clearfield County, Pa., ("Burning Questions at Gas Well," June 8), I cannot as an aging baby boomer help but marvel at what prophets some of the folksinger/composers of the Flower Power era were -- such as Joni Mitchell and Melanie with the lyric "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot" and the song "Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma."
With Rachel Carson credited as the founder of environmentalism, and the aforementioned folk singers, it's little wonder Native Americans and other cultures speak of Our Mother the Earth. It's way past time for us as a society to stop perpetrating matricide to the point of our inevitable extinction as the only way Our Mother the Earth might recover.
