-Penguins general manager Ray Shero said he has begun talks with the agents for unrestricted free agents Matt Cooke, Bill Guerin, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Ruslan Fedotenko, defensemen Sergei Gonchar (above, with Guerin), Jordan Leopold, Mark Eaton and Jay McKee.

Atlantic Division

-As a Stanley Cup runner-up, the Flyers don't have a lot going for them in regards to history.

Northeast Division

-The Maple Leafs officially named defenseman Dion Phaneuf as the team's new captain.

-Toronto also unveiled a "new" way to make money jersey.

-Senators fans actually held a rally in honor honour of forward Jason Spezza on Parliment Hill in Ottawa. Spezza has been the subject of trade rumors.

Southeast Division

-The Capitals will not re-sign unrestricted free agent Brendan Morrison.

-Washington will unveil its Winter Classic uniforms Oct. 2.

-The agent for unrestricted free agent forward Maxim Afinogenov (right) said his client isn't close on a contract extension with the Thrashers.

Central Division

-Some of the Blackhawks made an appearance on The Tonight Show.

-The Blues signed defenseman Nikita Nikitin, a fifth-round pick in 2004, to an entry-level contract.

Northwest Division

-Canucks forward Alex Burrows underwent shoulder surgery.

Pacific Division

-Sharks captain Rob Blake is expected to formally announce his retirement Friday.

-Former Penguins forward Mike Stapleton was hired as the head coach of the Ducks' new AHL affiliate in Syracuse.

Calder Cup Final

Michal Neuvirth made 22 saves and led the Hershey Bears, Washington's AHL affiliate, to a 4-0 shutout of the Texas Stars, Dallas' AHL affiliate, in Game 6 of the Calder Cup Final. The Bears won the series, 4-2.

Adams Division

-Former Hurricanes/Panthers/Flames forward Byron Ritchie has joined MODO in Sweden.

-Former Wild/Lightning forward Kyle Wanvig has joined Augsburger Panther in Germany.

-Happy 64th birthday to former Pittsburgh Hornets defenseman Bart Crashley.
