Onorato's drink tax has been bad for businesses

Written by Susan Mannella on .

As a member of the Arizona Restaurant Association and the National Restaurant Association, and having family in Pittsburgh who own restaurants in the Pittsburgh area, I cannot believe my hometown newspaper could endorse Dan Onorato for governor. The great people of Pennsylvania should know that the Pennsylvania Restaurant Association supports Jack Wagner.

Fact: The restaurant and hospitality industry is the second-leading industry for jobs in America. Fact: Taxes on alcoholic drinks have been passed in cities across the country with disastrous results. It has hurt employment, stymied new job creation and has decreased sales tax revenue throughout the restaurant industry in those respective cities.

Although I live in Arizona, my family owns several restaurants in the Pittsburgh area, and I know for a fact that they are struggling. They support Jack Wagner.

The people of Pennsylvania need to support someone who will continue to grow jobs and create revenue for the state, and that is not Dan Onorato. Ask bar and restaurant owners in the South Side, Downtown and the North Shore how they've been affected by Dan's drink tax. Imagine him having the opportunity to do it statewide.

Wake up, Post-Gazette! Wake up, voters of Pennsylvania! Start paying attention and elect the best Democratic candidate for Pennsylvania: Jack Wagner.

P.S.: Your editorial staff is not welcome in the biggest Steeler bar in America outside of Pittsburgh.
