A difficult problem
Reader Suzanne Powell ("No Absolute Proof," May 19 letters) is correct that it is very difficult to carry credentials proving one's right to citizenship. However, if one is a bona fide legal resident alien, one is required to carry a green identity card at all times until one achieves citizenship.
As a legal immigrant myself who became a naturalized citizen, I have mixed feelings about illegal immigrants. Given the hoops I and my family had to go through, I am resentful of those who evade that process. However, if I were a youngish Mexican man with a destitute family, would I try the illegal route over the border? You betcha -- and so would most red-blooded Americans.
The real problem is what to do with the 12 million illegal immigrants here now.
