I doubt that the public would benefit

Written by Susan Mannella on .

I do believe some people have come up with a bogus tax at last. The idea that adding 25 cents to a gallon of gas is going to fix roads, bridges, etc. is wrong ("Would Higher Gas Tax Offset Car Repairs?" May 25). It would only line politicians' coffers for pet projects.

When I lived in California, it imposed (over 10 years ago) a 5-cent increase on gas, and this was to go for public transportation, road repairs, etc. Somehow or another the roads are still not fixed, public transportation is still a nightmare and no one can account for the money collected. So, beware, the phony magicians are at it again.
