I was surprised as anyone when I opened the paper last week and saw a story warning that Old Economy Village might close. I was just there during one of the hottest days of the summer to film and produce a video about the incredible gardens there (you can see it in the player to the left). Watch the video to see just one of the reasons this place needs to stay open.
Closing Old Economy Village would be like closing Williamsburg. This national landmark has been preserved since 1916 for a reason, it's an important historical site. When I last visited I met two different families who had travelled from Italy to see the village and marvelled at the architecture. I guess it's just human nature that sometimes we don't appreciate something in our backyard.
Old Economy deserves to live on, one way to help Old Economy is to attend their Christmas at the Village fundraiser on Dec. 5.
Tickets will be sold at the Visitor Center located at 270 16th Street in Ambridge. Admission is $10 per adult, $5 per child (ages 3-17). The program runs from 2 - 8:30 p.m. Free parking is available at the Visitors Center.
Now that the site is temporarily closed, my biggest regret is that I've never taken the tour of all the buildings, I've only been in the gardens. When Old Economy re-opens, I plan to be one of the first to examine the building and learn more details of the rich history of the place.
