Very big carrots from Old Economy Village

Written by Doug Oster on .

I was out at Old Economy Village this morning doing a live remote for KDKA's Pittsburgh Today Live. The place is closed due to state budget cuts, but have a cool event called Christmas at the Village on Saturday 12/5/09 from 2:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. It's a way to help the place out and sign petitions to get legistlators to move some money around and get it open. It's only $10 for adults and $5 for kids.

After I was done the site's horticuturalist Dean Sylvester showed me around the garden to see what was left. I couldn't believe the size of the carrots he pulled out of the ground. I put quarter down on a bench to show the scale. Dean sure can garden, and I can just imagine the Harmonists that once lived here picking their carrots a couple weeks before Christmas. Dean was one of the subjects in a video I produced about Old Economy (view in the player on the left) before I had any idea this historic site might close.

I hope they figure this all out and get Old Economy open, it's a wonderful place and a priceless historic treasure.
