Ed Bouchette checks in from the South Side with this update on the Steelers No. 1 -- but still unsigned -- draft pick:
"Rashard Mendenhall may not have a signed contract yet but that hasn’t stopped him from working out at the Steelers facility on the South Side. Mendenhall, the team’s first-first round draft choice, put in another workout on Thursday. As he left the facility, he said he’s looking forward to his first pro training camp.
In the old days, an unsigned rookie this close to training camp would come nowhere near the team’s facility – some agents would not even let their unsigned players come to town until they had a contract and their signing bonus in hand. But times have changed and rookie contract negotiations rarely drag on as they once did because of the unofficial slotting system for draft picks.
While the star running back from Illinois along with the team’s second-round pick, wide receiver Limas Sweed, remain unsigned, coach Mike Tomlin and bossman Kevin Colbert both expressed confidence they will have contracts by Sunday and report to training camp in Latrobe on time with their new teammates."
