Doubled up - 12-31-09

Martin Brodeur's (above, stopping Ruslan Fedotenko) second shutout of the season against a team as offensively talented as the Penguins was impressive. But it's hardly unprecedented. At least compared to the early years of the Penguins.
It marked the second time in Brodeur's career he put up a goose egg against the Penguins twice in a regular season. And with two more games against the Penguins, he has a chance to match former Kings goaltender Rogie Vachon as the only goaltender to shut out the Penguins three times in a season. Heck, the way he's going, he could pass Vochon.
Anyway, here's the list of goaltenders who have blanked the Penguins two or more times in a single regular season:

-Despite getting shutout a franchise record 14 times in 1969-70, the Penguins managed to get to the playoffs that spring and even swept the Oakland Seals in the first round.
-How odd to 0-0 ties look nowadays with the shootout?
In terms of career leaders, Brodeur is second to another notable Penguins rival, Bernie Parent:
| Player, Teams | Shutouts |
| Bernie Parent, Flyers/Maple Leafs | 10 |
| Martin Brodeur, Devils | 7 |
| Ed Giacomin, Rangers | 7 |
| Rogie Vachon, Kings | 7 |
| Tony Esposito, Blackhawks | 5 |
| Bruce Gamble, Maple Leafs, Flyers | 5 |
| Cesare Maniago, North Stars | 5 |
| Roberto Luongo, Panthers | 4 |
| Gerry Cheevers, Bruins | 3 |
| Gerry Desjardins, Kings/Sabres | 3 |
| Pete Peeters, Flyers/Capitals | 3 |
| Jose Theodore, Canadiens | 3 |
| Ernie Wakely, Blues | 3 |
-Players are only listed with the teams for which they recorded shutouts against the Penguins.
-Cesare Maniago might be the greatest hockey name ever.
