Mad hatters - 12-12-08

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

Hopefully, it will be mild winter here in Pittsburgh. Because Penguins fans are running low on hats on account of all the hat tricks this season by their team.

(Yeah, that was a really lame lead in. Sorry.)

Even before last night's offensive fireworks, the Penguins had a pretty solid lead in terms of hat tricks this season. Take a look at the team leaders in hat trick totals this season through last night:

Team Hat Tricks Players
Penguins 5 Sidney Crosby

Pascal Dupuis

Evgeni Malkin

Jordan Staal

Petr Sykora
Bruins 2 Milan Lucic

Blake Wheeler
Flames 2 Mike Cammalleri

Jarome Iginla
Stars 2 Fabian Brunnstrom

Mark Parrish
Blues 1 B.J. Crombeen
Canadiens 1 Christopher Higgins
Capitals 1 Alex Ovechkin
Coyotes 1 Martin Hanzal
Devils 1 Dainius Zubrus-*
Ducks 1 Teemu Selanne
Flyers 1 Scott Hartnell
Hurricanes 1 Eric Staal
Kings 1 Dustin Brown
Rangers 1 Chris Drury
Senators 1 Jason Spezza

*-Four goals.

Interestingly enough, four hat tricks took place last night. In addition to Dupuis and Sykora, Brown and Hartnell had hats thrown at them as well.

The Penguins' record for hat tricks in a season is 13 in 1988-89. Mario Lemieux had nine while Rob Brown had four.
