Penguins

-Michel Therrien (right) advised the coaches for the Blackhawks and Red Wings to expect a slower game in the Winter Classic.

-Ryan Whitney is expected to play for the AHL Penguins tonight.

-The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins had their home game last night against the Hershey Bears postponed until Jan. 11 due to snow.

-Bryan Ewing had a goal and an assist for the Wheeling Nailers in a 7-3 loss to the rival Johnstown Chiefs.

Atlantic Division

-Patrik Elias had two goals and two assist for the Devils in a 5-1 defeat of the Senators. Elias has a nine-game point-scoring streak. Zach Parise added four assists. Former Penguins forward Jarkko Ruutu scored Ottawa's only goal while shorthanded. Fire Ray Shero.

-The Flyers recalled forward Josh Gratton from their puppy-drowning AHL affiliate and demoted forward Andreas Nodl.

-Devils coach Brent Sutter suggested injured goaltender Martin Brodeur could be back by February.

-Irony alert: A New York writer complained Mats Sundin got greedy and spurned the Rangers over money.

Northeast Division

-Ryan Miller made 40 saves and recorded his 10th career shutout for the Sabres in a 5-0 shutout of the Kings. Derek Roy led Buffalo offensively with a goal and two assists.

-Sabres forward Maxim Afinogenov is still struggling.

-Senators defenseman Anton Volchenkov has recovered from a "lower-body" injury while forward Jesse Winchester is suffering from an "upper-body" injury.

-Is it time to blow everything up and re-build in Ottawa?

Southeast Division

-With goaltender Kari Lehtonen and defenseman Mathieu Schneider healthy again, the Thrashers demoted goaltender Ondrej Pavelec to Chicago of the AHL. Defenseman Garnet Exelby is expected to miss three weeks due to a leg injury.

-Carolina defenseman Joe Corvo is hot on offense.

-The Hurricanes demoted defenseman Brett Carson to Albany of the AHL.

-The Lightning put forward Jussi Jokinen (right) on waivers and demoted goaltender Karri Ramo to Norfolk of the AHL.

-Tampa Bay is still mad about goaltender Mike Smith's alleged stick throw.

-The Capitals are creating a monster.

-Washington demoted goaltender Simeon Varlamov to Hershey of the AHL and activated goaltender Jose Theodore from injured reserve.
