Capitals acquire Belanger - 03-03-10

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

The Capitals have acquired forward Eric Belanger (right) from the Wild in exchange for a conditional second-round draft pick.

Belanger, 32, has 35 points (13 goals, 22 assists) and is a minus-1 in 60 games this season. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

EN Says: We like this move for the Capitals. Belanger is a guy who is an ideal No. 3 center. He might be asked to fill in as a No. 2 in spurts in Washington and he's capable of that. But only in portions.

Most importanly, he's a very, very good defensive player. He should immediately become one of the Capitals' top penalty killers. He's an excellent faceoff specialist at 57.6 percent. And his point production is more than respectable.

The Wild doesn't appear to be totally giving up on the season. Belanger isn't a player who will make or break too many rosters, but this isn't exactly a move that would support a playoff run this season.
