Sidney Crosby and Ryan Whitney (right) will not play tonight against the Islanders. Crosby will sit out due to a groin injury he sustained Sunday in Washington while Whitney is attending to a family matter. Janne Pesonen was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He has played seven games in the NHL this season and is a minus-3. In the AHL, he has recorded 49 points (16 goals, 33 assists) in 47 games.
EN Says: This probably isn't how Penguins fans envisioned it happening, but they're getting their wish granted by seeing Whitney leave the lineup. If nothing else, this will force the coaching staff to alter the power play in some fashion. After going 1-for-437,234 (approximately) in Washington, something needed to be changed.
If Crosby's going to miss a game, at least it's against the Islanders. Hopefully for the Penguins, this is being done as a precautionary measure.
For Pesonen, this might be his last chance to show what he can do at the NHL level. You have to believe Dan Bylsma, who is very familiar with him, will give him some more playing time than Michel Therrien ever did.
